Ruger #1 stainless
« on: January 07, 2007, 05:51:41 AM »
I just got my new ruger #1 stainless from the gunstore.  I got it in 7mm Remington mag.  It shoots great.  Put a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5x14x40 side focus scope on it.  Ive been shootin 139 grain btsp Hornady ammon through it.  It shoots them great and they were the cheapest bullets they had.  What other grain bullets should I try.  I like the lighter bullets for whitetail and hogs they seem to do the trick.  Also,  what would be a good replacement trigger to get the pull down to 1 to 2lbs?

I installed the Moyers trigger in my stainless No.One Varmint -

I aslo installed the Wolff hammer spring -

Along with triming the trigger return spring, this brought the trigger pull down to ~1.5# - but this is a varmint/target rifle.  IMO a trigger this light does not belong on a hunting rifle - due to the complexity of the Ruger trigger, it is less "safe" than a corresponding weight bolt action trigger. I'd not have less than 2# on my hunting rifles.  YMMV

I'll "go" Lone Star one better...

I wouldn't bring the trigger down below 3 lbs. in a big game hunting rifle, especially if the rifle will be used in cold weather hunting where you willl probably wear gloves.

As Lone Star wrote (and I agree), a 1 or 2 lb. trigger on a varmint rifle is a totally different thing than the same thing on a regular hunting rifle.  My own heavy-barreled Sako in .222 has an 18 ounce trigger while my big game rifles have 3 lb to3½ lb. triggers... but normally, varmint hunters take VERY deliberate shots during warm weather (no gloves).  That is a totally different scenario than when shooting at big game in a late Autumn or early Winter woods.

After a half century of hunting, I can tell you that what you need on your 7mm Rem. Magnum is a "clean" trigger... one with no creep that "breaks" cleanly at 3 lbs. or so for your own and your hunting partner's safety.   :)

Got my first deer with my new #1.  It was a 172lb doe.  I haven't done anything with the trigger yet.  I did get it to the range.  Shot a five shot group that measured 3/8 of an inch.  Prettey impressed my self.  Cant wait to get a better trigger in it.  I plan to do some checkering to to stock and forarm.  It tries to slide out of my hand with the smooth fininsh.  I ordered a checkering kit wednesday.  Going to do some practice on my H&R huntsman before I do any on the #1.

I put a Moyers in my 7mm rem mag #1, and had it adjusted to 2.5 lbs. I have it shooting 150 gr. Nosler C/T bullets 2"high @ 100 yards with boring consistency..

I have another #1 that I'm having rechambered to 30-06 A.I. I already had  a trigger job done on it, but still thinking about another Moyers for it, too.
