Biggest game animal with hard cast
« on: February 07, 2007, 01:47:07 PM »
What is the biggest game animal "you've" ever taken, or seen taken, with a hardcast bullet. Please specify caliber, approx muzzle velocity, bullet profile/type, and results, ie; distance to recovery, recovered bullet, animal reaction, and the like.

Biggest was a 275 lb boar last year with my 6-1/2" TC Contender.  Load was a 400 gr. LBT LFN, range was about 25 yds.  Load ran about 900+ fps.  Excellent penetration, shot a little high, no heart, just double lungs.  Boar "staggered" at the shot, but travelled 50 yds. before laying down.  I know they are tough, but I shot another 2 years before, .475 Linebaugh, same distance, load was a 425 gr. LBT WFN, 1350 fps.  Boar didn't go 5 feet, much more internal damage.  (LOTS), enough to impress the guide alot.  I Like the big flat nose slugs, but in my limited experience, I'd shoot them as fast as you can shoot well.  The extra velocity makes a big difference.  My brother got a boar (witnessed), 500 S&W, 440 gr. LFN, 1,400 fps.  2" hole in, 2" hole out, exit through the spine, so it didn't move.

The biggest I have taken was a 265 pound boar with a 300 gr. hard cast bullet from my 44 Mag. One shot and it dropped in it's tracks. The bullet passed through both shoulders. I have taken several deer and smaller black bear with my 500 Mag and 370 gr. hard cast bullets with the same results.

Hard cast bullets are all I will use in my handguns for hunting.

two bison. One at about 1000 lbs and one 1100 both with .500 linebaughs  one with a 440lfnpb at about 1200fps and one with a 450lfngc at about 1100 fps. Both went about 50 yards before dieing one shot at 50 yards one at 75 first one shot twice second one once no recovered bullets. various pigs deer and bear with 475s 45s and 44s and 41s. IVe recovered exactly one bullet and that was a 6 point whitetail shot with a 45 colt smith using a 255 swc at about 900 fps bullet went in hind quarter at an angle and was found under the skin on the oposite front shoulder broke bones in the hind quarter and front shoulder. It was cast slightly soft out of ww and pure and if it would have been a touch harder i wouldnt have recovered that one either.

Water buffalo cow, 750 pounds estimated, 325 pounds of meat from butcher, .44 Special 4 inch Model 24-3, 1008 fps with CCI 300 primers (not a good choice) and 13.0 grains Blue Dot.  Now I use Winchester Large Pistol Primers and 11.5 grains Blue Dot.  250 pound hogs with .45 Colt 255 grain SWC at 1040 fps, .44 Magnum Winchester 240 grain HPs.

I shot this ruffed grouse at about 60 yards with my Ruger in 45 Colt.  I was using a 300 grain swc gc cast out of straight wheel weight over 21.0gr of H-110.  I have this load chronied at 1194 fps out of this gun.  Complete penetration.   ;D  I was not able to recover the bullet.  :-\  The bird died where it was standing after flopping a time or two.

270 lb Black Bear at a distance of 30 meters with a wildcat 40 caliber pistol round using a 170 gn Keith sytle semiwadcutter from an RCBS 40170 mould at approximately 1400'/sec (from the muzzle).  I fired as the bruin turned away from me with the bullet impacting the on-side chest wall, penetrating between ribs, coursing across the top of the heart and lung and exiting through the right shoulder.  The bear went down on his chin, kicked, spun a bit and made some teeth gnashing noises and then lay still.  The bullet was not recovered.  The shoulder socket had been destroyed and destabalized which is why, I think, he went down so quickly.  The bullet cut across the top of the heart and he bled out quickly.  Mikey.
