Ring height
« on: January 31, 2007, 04:40:44 PM »
Got my .308 Ultra this evening from the dealer.  I got home and was all ready to mount my scope when i realized that none of the rings I had on hand were tall enough.

Is there a standard for ring size that works with the H&R rifles?  I'm going to be getting a set of rings tomorrow and just want to know what to look for, and to make sure I get rings that are tall enough.

Thanks.

There's not really a standard since scopes aren't standard in design or mounting position, but if the power ring and/or ocular bell clear the hammer in the right place, mediums will work, it just depends. I use Burris Signature Zees, mediums most of the time, but some scopes don't allow them, need to go high. I have long arms, so I can mount a scope forward enough and still have a good view thru the scope, but if it needs to be mounted with the hammer right at the power ring or ocular bell, highs are probably the only choice unless you bob the hammer off a bit as shown in the FAQs.

I actually just got done reading the FAQ's on the hammer modification.  The only rings I have at home right now are Weavers and they are barely off the scope mount.   The scope is a 40mm.

Objective diameter doesn't make too much difference, what scope is it?... maybe I have one and can help ya out. That's a 6.5-20x50mm Simmons WTC18 on a Handi, mounted in medium Sig Zees. ;)

It's a Simmons 8-Point in 3-9x40.

I don't have an 8-point 3-9x, just a shotgun scope, but looking at one on the web, it appears you should be able to position the scope so the hammer is just behind or in front of the power ring and use medium rings. Medium Burris Sig Zees are .270" from the top of the rail to the bottom of the scope tube for reference. My Hornet has a Simmons scope on it which is similar to your scope in the rear part, it's mounted in medium Sig Zees.

I've used both Weaver and Burris signature Zees in high (tall) and have no trouble w/ Cheek weld. Weaver w/ 3-9x40 NIkon and Burris w/ 4.5-14x42 Burris.

The top rifle in this picture has a simmons 3-9x40.
I was able to use medium rings and put the hammer between odjective bell and power ring.
I don't remember what brand. (Cheap)

I generally use Burris Zee rings and had to go to the high rings to mount a Nikon 2-6 ProStaff on my 7-08.  No idea if other manufacturers medium rings might have fit.  I'm guessing that the hammer spur will necessitate a higher than normal ring for a given scope style/size.

Good luck.  -WSJ
