Unique and 44 mag
« on: February 03, 2007, 05:43:27 PM »
New to the site here.  Been reloading 240 and 300 grain XTP for a while now for my 7.5 in Ruger SRH.  Now want to get into shooting hard cast.  I have 255 grain WFN PB Cast Perf. bullets.  Plan on using Remington 2.5 LP and/or CCI 300 LP primers.  I want to use Unique powder to find a load that is 1150 - 1250 FPS.  Any thoughts?  I was thinking around 10 grain should do it.  I also have 300 Grain WFN GC bullets that I would like to get the same velocity out of.  Other powders I have are H-110, Longshot, Herco, and Green Dot.  Going to be used primarily for whitetail in Michigan.  Thanks.

10 of unique or 11 of herco will put you in the vacintity of 1000 fps give or take 50 fps. If you want more then that, which with a 250swc is a great whitetail load, id consider switching to 110, 2400, lilgun, aa9,4227 ect as the slower powders will get you that velocity without near the pressure. My favorite 44 mag load is 20-22 grains of h4227 with a mag primer and a 250 cast. Another would be 20 grains of aa9 and the same primer and bullet. Im not a big fan of 110 its a good top end powder but its just not very flexible. It cant be down loaded and its harder then most to ignite which is something a fellow michigander can appreciate especially if you walk outside right now as its 11 below zero on my thermometer. The best advise i can give you is to buy a loading manual. Theres alot of good SAFE loads for the .44s in them. Your taking a big chance taking advise on loading over the internet as you have no idea the experience level of the man giving it. Theres people that have loaded a hundred shells and think there the god appointed expert on loading and theres even idiots that give bad adivise intentionaly. BE CAREFULL

According to my old Hornady manual.......

Unique 9.7 gr = 1050 fps, 10.2 gr = 1100 fps, 10.7 gr = 1150 fps, 11.2 gr = 1200 fps.

11.2 gr being the max suggested load.
The test firearm for these loads was 44 Mag Ruger Super Blackhawk w/7.5 inch barrel.

For heavier loads, i like H-110 for my 44 mags, and that's the powder i'd try if it was me.

9 gr of Unique pushes the 429421 250 gr SWC out of my 6 1/2" Ruger FT .44 at 1050 fps and is a very accurate load, not max by any means. Work up from there if you must. If I want more than that I go to 2400 or H110 and push that bullet out at 1300 fps.

I know all about shooting heavy loads.  I have loaded many 300 grain XTP's to max.  I just got tired of breaking my wrist shooting hot expanding bullets , so I thought I would try shooting cast bullets a bit slower.  Trying to punch 2 holes instead of 1. Just found Beartooth bullets and they say 12 grains of Unique will push a 250 gr. WFN GC at 1261.  Going to drop to 10 or 11 and see how they do.  I just loaded some 300 WFN GC with 19.5 of H-110 too.  keep you posted.  any pet loads for the 255 or 300 cast???  Thanks

I prefer 2400 or win 296  in the 44 with my 310 gr lee cst w/gc fills the case and not as much chance as double charge as unique.

I find with my 44 sbh with a 7 1/2 barrel and unique powder that 11 gr and a hard cast 240 gr swc leaves heavy amounts of lead and loss of accuracy after 4 rounds.  The same bullets and 10 gr of unique is fine.  These bullets are sized to .430. ;D
