Finished Gun Stock, Inc. Walnut Stocks Pics???????????
« on: February 01, 2007, 04:24:24 AM »
Guys,

I'm looking for some pictures and inspiration to go ahead a buy a new walnut stock set from GSI.  I'm thinking about the Standard "factory" looking stock with the monte carlo comb.  I'm a little unsure if I want to get a schnabel forearm or a straight one.  I'm going for some nice walnut, not the laminate.  I have the synthetic stuff on my 270 and I want to dress it up some.  I just bought a .243 barrel and that got me thinking about upgrading my stocks again.  I think Quick and some other guys have posted pics of their's stocks here before, but I can't find the links.  If someone can point me in the right direction for the links or post a few pics, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

270

I don't have any pictures for you 270 but I agree with you on going for a nice walnut stock instead of a laminate. I think most laminates are a bit nicer than most pallet wood stocks but a nice piece of walnut beats them both by a mile....<><.... :)

A lot of Handi pics can be seen in a link in the FAQs," Let's see some Handis".

.270,
I posted this a couple of weeks ago, but this is the stock I fished right around Christmas. It is the fiddle back maple stock from GSI. The forearm used to be the target/varmit forend, but it was too long and bulky for my taste. I cut it down, and this is what it looks like. By the way, this rifle is also a .270.

C,

Nice looking stock set. Good job on the finishing.  How do you like the rollover cheekpeice?

One thing the rollover cheek piece does is that it forces you to have the same cheek weld every time. The rear of the cheek piece is just a little higher than the front, and you have to be in the same spot to get perfect on your scope. It is taking a little getting used too, but I am pretty used to it by now. I have shot about 60 rounds so far.

If you go with weaver rings, then you will have to go with the extra high rings because the regular high rings are not high enough for the cheek piece unless you really grind your cheek into the stock. The cheek piece gives you the feeling the the x-high rings are low, and it gives you a little more clearance for the trigger.

I'm pretty happy so far. I just loaded 5 groups of 5 with a difference of 1 grain of powder each and I am going to do a little experimenting if it quits raining.

Thanks for the info.  I think i'm still leaning toward the factory looking monte carlo style, but that may change.  By the way, have you tried any Federal Fusions in your 270 yet?  I have not because my Tasco scope broke on the second shot of a range session last November, but I shot them in my Tikka 25-06 all year and just had wonderful groups with them.  Just curious.

.270,
As far as factory loads go, It seems to like Remington Core-lokts over the Winchester Power Points. Last week I tried the Federal Fusions, and they were more consistant than the Remington. Of course it is just getting broke in good. My idea of lapping is to just shoot a lot.

I am trying my hand at reloading, and I will probably be shooting my hand loads for a while, (probably forever)  and I have a lot of brass after this past month. If I were to shoot factory loads, I would definately shoot the Fusions in my gun, and the price is hard to beat compared to some of the premium ammo.

I have 3 Bushnell Banners, and I have not had any problems with them. They are a good scope for the price. IMO
That's what's on my gun.
