Reloading Cast bullets in 35 Whelen
« on: January 24, 2007, 01:35:45 PM »
Have 200 grain cast with GC that I plan on using in my 35 Whelen.  Has any one use Hodgdon H1000 or IMR 4064?  Need a starting point.
Plan is for 17-1900 fps.

I used 38 to 40 grains of Hodgdon BL-C(2) driving a 195 grain bullet w/o gas check, made of just air cooled wheel weight.  Most accurate when velocity was in the 1800 fps range. 1" at 50 yards (peep sights).

The bullet is from Lyman's .357 RN mold I forget the #.

Isn't H1000 really slow?  As in short-fat mag powder.

You want a powder fast enough to generate enough pressure to obturate the bullet, and burn cleanly.  But you want a powder slow enough to maintain that pressure curve to bring the velocity up to stabilize the bullet.

quickdtoo.  Tried the sight, lots of good info but very little on cast bullets
Black Jaque Janaviac.  Yes, H1000 is slow, works good in my 6.5x55 with 140 grain bullets.  Not good at all with the 100 grain and just ok with the 129grain.  Had a couple of pounds and thought I might try it.
Will also be loading 170 grain cast in my .38 special....any suggestion on what powder would work for both ?

170 grain in .38 Special??? You want hot or softball? 2400 is a trifle slow, but workable (if the barrel is not 2 inches) for hot loads. From there go to a manual. 110/W296... the other hot, hot... Softball/target, bullseye is the old standard. Red dot. Green Dot. W231. Trap 100. Again, you need the guidance of a manual. (Powder maker's web sites often have data that is useful. Proceed carefully, please.)

H1000? there is an approach some take with super slow mil. surplus powders. You fill the case, seat the bullet and see what you get. It is DIRTY. Lots of crud left behind. It may get the bullet off well and may not. You have to try. Full case is safe enough but not efficient and if you shoot much, lot of need for cleaning.

4895 (H or IMR) has been the cast bullet standard. 4064 is close and might do as well, but might not. Again, you need the guidance of a manual. If you want to save a tiny amount, you go with the fast large pistol, small rifle powders. "Reduced loads." 4227. 2400. 3031. luck.

The 35 Whelen Loadbook should be an inexpensive source for lots of data, it includes data from the Lyman 3rd Edition Cast Bullet Handbook and  RCBS Cast Bullet Manual #1 for about $7, Sportsmans Warehouse carries them.

Thanks Quickdtoo, didn't know they made a cast bullet reloading book...cool...

Just figured out that I have a place for private messages.  Had several old messages....sorry about not responding folks...didn't know how that worked.....

Nuther great day, I learned something new......twice.... ;D ;D ;D

iiranger; looking for soft, one is a 4" the other a 2" 5 shot.

Only reason I mention the h1000 and IMR 4064, I have two of each on the shelf.

Quickdtoo, Stopped at the local Gander Mountain with the intention of picking up the Lyman cast bullet reloading book.  Luckily I thumbed thru it first.  Not one load for a 35 Whelen...although they did have the 358....go figure.  No more info than what I have in my current Lyman.
Guess the next stop is Midway to see what they have.
Gander does have cast 38 bullets in .357 dia.  My question is:  How will the performance and accuracy be (pistol)?  I have read that many used oversized bullets in cast....like a .360 ?

Hmmm, their description makes the Lyman Cast Bullet 3rd edition sound good, must just be a generic description for all Loadbooks. Even the Lyman 48th has several 35 Whelen loads, only 2 of which are cast tho, 195gr and 204gr.

Good luck!

Went to Midway and ordered their 38 spec and 35 whelen load books.  Hopefully they will have a little more.  Do have some 3031 powder so may give it a try for the Whelen.  Gander was out of Unique so I picked up a lb of Bullseye for the 38.

Have you tried the remington bulk bullets ?  If they work, would definately be a cost save there................oops, starting to sound like I am at work.....

I've only loaded 225gr TSX and 250gr Speer spitzers in my Whelen.

Yep.  Mighty fine bullets.  Only gripe is they're only offered in 200 grain.
