.300 conversion?
« on: February 01, 2007, 03:36:54 PM »
I've been doing alot of searching and I can't seem to find any info on a .300 win mag conversion for a handi rifle. I'm not sure if it's even possible but I think it would be prety cool. Anybody have any comments?  By the way this forum is very cool!

Hi.you can check with the other people here but I am almost sure that the pressure levels are to great for the 300 Win mag to be loaded on the Handi frame.

The Handi's aren't made to take the stress of a magnum cartridge.

Yeah I figgured thats the answer I'd find. What cartridge would Y'all suggest That would be close for a 300 yard Elk\Bear\Moose gun?

I would say 30-06 or 45-70 with alot of practice at that range.

I would say  30-06, or 45-70. 270 & 280 would be penlty for elk and moose,
possible black bear. just MHO  Marv.

check out the 35 whelen, it will match 338 mag with handloads and would be suitable for what you mention.  225 grainers at 2800 fps and higher is a stout load indeed

Can you use Federal's high energy premium loads in a handi? That would give you a little more than the standard 30-06.

A 30-06 will kill any of the above out the 300 yard mark and beyond with ease.   And if you needed a bigger gun than a 30-06 (ie: for chasing Alaskan Brown Bears), I would suggest you jump straight to a 375H&H as a minimum, and get a repeating rifle of some form to boot.      :)

Side note - there is nothing wrong with a 300 mag, but really, it's just a .308 bullet going faster, which only buys you something of any consequence when the yardage gets out well past 300 yards.

savage1, you won't find any belted magnums for the handi except the 450 Marlin which has no where near the pressure of a 300 mag or 7 mag.
Bill3006, yes you can use the Federal high energy and Hornady light magnum loads in a handi. They use a special blend of powders to keep the pressures within SAAMI specs. Either one in a 30-06 would be hot on the heels of a 300 mag.

If you run those 30 06 light magnums through a chrono, you're in for a surprise. You can beat them with a near max load of IMR 4350 in a 30 06. They overate the light magnums quite abit, they must have fast typewriters. The 300 mags have quite alot more horse power than the 30 06.I have both but the 300's will outdo the 06 pretty bad.  Digger
