Hey yall, would a Monte Carlo be alright for iron-sights? I understand they were designed for a scope in mind, but I was just wondering. I am probably gonna end up ordering the regular Handi-Rifle walnuts, but was wondering about the Monte.

Just depends on ergonomics, some folks can use em, some can't, depends on how their face fits the stock. For a youth shooter, I would say yes, but only you'll be able to determine that.

One last thing I'm debating on is whether or not I am gonna actually need a pistol grip stock. I mean I do like pistol grips, but on my Topper 58 20ga, it is a simple straight stock, and it works fine. It also seems like I am more in control it when I hold it, rather than the actual pistol grip. I do have big hands, so maybe thats why. And lastly, if I'm actually gonna need the swivel studs too....decisions decisions...

Put a monte carlo on my versa-pack...i can't get down to the .410 sights..that's me..perhaps you can.
I like the monte for my rifle scope...may raise sights on the .410...

Well, my initial range trip went fairly well. At first the rifle was very noticibly shooting to the left. So we got a rubber mallet, ran a string down the front sight and centered the rear sight. The rifle no longer shoots to the left, as far I I could tell. The only thing that I didnt like was that I noticed that the rear sight base itself it a little bent to the right, if you try to line it up along with the 3 taps on the barrel. This was a little dissappointing, but the strange thing is that when I ran a string down the barrel, to rear sight base is centered correctly, it just seems that something is just a hair off. I am definitely going to change the stocks to wood. So far, I really like the rifle....its extremely light and handy. I also think the .22 Mag is a great round, it definitely sounded off with authority....and showed it on target. I sighted it to 25 yards, as I dont think I'm going to shoot it past that range with iron sights. I can hit what I aim at with it, a good bit of the time, so I'm happy. I just think the rifle will show more "character" when she gets some wood on 'er ;D

Also, can anyone tell me some good aftermarket rear sights that will fit the Sportster? I'm also thinking about picking up one of those if they arent too expensive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Georgian, how about calling H&R customer service and explaining that you ordered a new Sportster and it came through with a flimsy and cheap slide on rear sight and ask if they have any of the previous style rear sights available on the youth Sportster. If you remember the fiasco when the tried to use those cheap plastic sights, those that called and politely complained and inquired were sent new metal sights to replace the cheap plastic sights. This seems to be another poor decision by the company and perhaps if enough people called and complained about the new cheap sights they will go back the the better sights they had. It's worth a try, they have a toll free line, just be polite. Let us know what happens. Remember the fine people at CS are not the ones that make these poor decisions, they are the ones that try to help us, the customers, with managements poor business decisions....<><.... ;)

Well, the rear sight looks to be the same as what they put on the Marlin Model 60, as I compared them. The rear sight base just looks a little bent, and thats what I dont like. I'm probably just gonna get me a Lyman folding rear sight....and gonna order some Pardner stocks tomorrow.

MSP, that wouldn't work cuz the current rimfire sight is dovetailed, there are no mount holes for the other sights that they've used. :-\

I do notice that the front sight is pretty high. When I shoulder the rifle, I have to put one heck of a cheek weld on the thing, much harder than my Marlin Model 60, to get just the tip of the front sight showing. So I figure its either the front sight being too high, or the synthetic stock being a bit different than the wood. Actually yall, I think I figured out my "bent sight problem", lol. When me and my buddy tapped the rear sight base over, we tapped it too far, thus makeing the base seem like it was maybe bent, lol. I just corrected it, and she looks straight as an arrow now.

Georgian:

Could you take a look at the rear sight on your Sporster as I believe it may be the same as what's on my Marlin 60.

You might have to look closely to see this but I noticed on the Marlin's sight base arm, about midway between the dovetail and sight fin, there is a horizontal line/crack(?) one each side of the grooved arm that straddles the elevator ramp.

Does yours have it?

I'm wondering if this is by design to allow for added flexibility in the sight base arm as it rides up the elevator or if this is a defect?

Thanks,

I really dont notice anything that looks out of the ordinary on mine, but it is the same rear sight that the Model 60 has.
