41 rem mag loads
« on: February 02, 2007, 12:47:32 PM »
I'm now in the market for a Ruger Blackhawk 41mag.  I figured I'd start my search for loading info.  I'm going to start with some 170 and 210gr bullets.   Any data on pet loads would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Tom

The only slugs I shoot in my 41M is the 210 grain Rem. soft point.  It works well in front of 20.5 grains of H110 for a power-house load or 8 grains of Unique for a more mellow target/plinking load, all lit with Win. large pistol primer.  These loads are accurate and work well in my 6.5" Blackhawk.

I used to have the 6.5" blackhawk last year for hunting, and used a 210gr. lee tumble lube bullet made of wheel weights, regular cci primer, and a 1cc dipper full of unique(9.2gr.).  It made for a nice practice load that you could shoot all day long.  For deer I loaded up a 210gr. Speer GDHP, regular cci primer, and 19 gr. of 2400 powder.  It penetrated roughly 30" through a yearling deer at 40yds. last year.  Hope this helps.

Welcome to the ranks of the 41 fans! We like more company.  Yep what they say above for loads. I use 8-9 grains of Unique under a variety of jacketed and cast bullets for a small game and plinker load - very nice.  And H110, 296, and 2400 are great for full power loads with most bullets up to 265 gr cast.  Don't overlook H or IMR 4227 for heavy bullets too.

I'm experimenting with some 250 gr jackted bullets I got from Joe Cullison in Oregon.  He's selling them as "Outlaw bullets". 4227 is working well with them. Look down this forum you might find my posts.

I can't remember the loads but I've had great accuracy with 170 gr bullets - Sierra and the now unavailable Remingtons.

Those 250gr Outlaw bullets are a bunch of fun to shoot. I was shooting some in my Marlin 41 mag this weekend at the 1.690 OACL and using 20gr of H110. I was getting 2 to 3" groups at 100 yards (average) with the rejects I had from setting up the equipment.
I also managed to recover one, shot from my Redhawk into milk jugs full of water. It was a MV of about 1200fps at a distance of maybe 20 feet. It penetrated 6 milk jugs and stoped in #7, that translates to about 36" of penetration in water. It expanded to just over .500 and retained 246.3gr
My load from the Redhawk is shooting 5 shot groups into about 3.5 inches (average) at 100 yards.

dand, thanks for the kind reports. I think I have a winner here.
