Took my new Tikka Whitehunter 270 Winchester to the range Monday to zero it in at 200 yards. Here is my report.
Range: 200 yards, off the bench.
Wind: None
Temp: 68 F. and partial overcast
Ammo: Reloads, RP cases, winchester primers, 130 gr. BT Nosler,
H4831SC 55.0 grs.
FPS: 2709, book shows 2907 for the same load
Scope: Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9X40
Rings: Burris Signature with inserts
After shooting six shoots to get zero in on the x ring the next five shots were for record. Shooting each shot and letting the barrel cool down between shots the following was recorded:
First three shots: 3/4" Group at 200 yards (Should have let well enough alone)
The next two shots open up the group to 1 5/8" for a total of five shots.
Impressions: I really like my Tikka 270, but I like the Howa 1500 better, the Howa shoots the same size group, but I had replaced the stock on the Howa with a Bell & Carlson Medalist with integral aluminum bedding system and decelerator recoil pad which I really like. If I the same setup on the Tikka, it would go to the top of the class. Down the road I will replace the factory stock with a custom and have a decelerator recoil pad installed. If we were just comparing rifle to rifle and nothing else it would be the Tikka, given if it had the same stock, it would shoot better groups then this and 1 5/8" five shot group at 200 yards it nothing to sneeze at. It will get the job done on deer out to 400 yards.
