30-30 Handi info needed
« on: February 03, 2007, 12:31:34 PM »
I am going to order a new 30-30 Handi and was wondering what you guys think of them? Are they good shooters and what factory ammo are you useing? I will be reloading for it but first some factory stuff just to see what it can do for groups and barrel brake in then load some speer point bullets.
Thanks Jason

Before you say get a 45/70 that is next. My son will be able to shoot the 30-30 better for now.

Tim was that out of the box or after tinkering a little.

That's a barrel I bought on ebay that had a french gray finish, I stripped it, blued it and put it on a frame in syn MC stock set,  mounted a scope, it had no sights, went to the range and shot it, so yes, it was out of the box, I did no tweaking other than my usual bore polishing which I do to all of em.

I have a 30-30 and a 22 Hornet and both shoot well.  The 30-30 will group 1.5" at 100 and the Hornet will usually shoot about 1" at 100. I use factory ammo in both rifles, 150 Core Lokt's in the 30-30 and Remington 45 grain hollow points for the Hornet. I have plain-jane 4 power scopes on both as well. Go ahead and get the 30-30, you wont be disappointed.

I've had very good results with the Leadheads PN30-149G,.. which is a 150 grain gas checked bullet designed for use in the 30-30.

I haven't shot them through a 30-30, however,.... but they work very well in my K31 Swiss. I've pushed them to around 1800 fps with good accuracy.

My H&R/Handi 30-30s are my favorite close range hunting and plinking rifle. Right now I only have 4 30-30s, since one was rechambered to 30-40 last spring. They all have been good shooters, grouping within 1.5 MOA with Winchester 150 and 170 gr Silver Tips factory loads. Although 150gr's are my favorite, my Cabine will hold tighter with the 170s.

This mule doe was taken with my Carbine and 150 factory Silver Tips.

I love the Win. silvertip ammo in my circa 1942  Savage 99 .  I have yet to be able to take my new 30-30 Handi out and give it a try. I hate winter.

30-30 is a must just plain fun to shoot, mine does well with all the 125's & 130 hornady single shot pistol bullets. Have some 165 fp gas checks I need to try. My son took his first deer with a 30-30 handi this year so it is very dear to my heart
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Gould, that I believe has been the standard laminated stock for NEF rifles, at least that's the same stock I have seen on them at my local SGS.  Sure is a nice looker... I think I'm gonna order one of these in 30-30 myself.

This barrel I had cut to 18". Made it a handier truck/brush gun. The stocks are the NEF Special Edition (with medallion) that are found on NEFs from time to time. These I found on a 20 gauge in a pawn shop. The shot gun was new, and @ $90.00 was cheaper then ordering camo laminated stocks from NEF. Go figure!!

The straight stock camo and cinnamon laminated stocks are available in youth and full size direct from H&R, minus the medallion, those listed in the Retail Price list in the FAQ are uncheckered, but they're also available checkered. I got a set of the checkered cinns off ebay last night for $85 shipped, H&R sells em for $103 plus shipping.
