New import double rifles
« on: February 08, 2007, 01:47:05 PM »
Anyone have any info on these?  I have seen a picture, but as far as calibers/availability, I'm coming up short.

Last year they had them on their website and in the catalog but they never actually showed up for sale anywhere that I know of.  I beleive they're basically the Baikal doubles previously cataloged by EAA (but again, at least as far as I know, never actually imported).  I corresponded by e-mail with Baikal a couple years ago in anticipation of the 45-70 hitting the shelves but it never happened.  Next thing I heard was that Remington was going to import them under the Spartan brand but after 2 years not only haven't I seen one, it now seems like Remington took them out of the line-up.

There was quite a bit of discussion in various forums about them over the last few years.  I understand that the barrel regulation is accomplished by a jack screw, which I don't pretend ever to have seen.  I guess the screw puts variable pressure on 1 barrel to adjauct POI to the fixed barrel (?).

Anyway, I'm disappointed not to have one to consider for the $500 or $600 they were supposed to cost.  -WSJ

Thanks, thats the same basic info that I finally scrounged up yesterday off the net.  I did find a site that looked like an official Remington site, dated 2007, that lists them, even giving a MSRP of 735$ I believe, so maybe they are back in the lineup.  I was hoping for a 45-70, and did see that listed.  I guess it's wait and see.

You got the actual catalog? I'm sick of looking at the .pdf, lol. Everytime I fill out the form on their website, it times out. Gander gave me one last year but they didnt have them in yet as of 3 days ago :(

*I wish they'd update their website to reflect the changes/additions to their line!

Nope, no actual catalog, just an online site with a big Rem logo, and all the normal stuff you'd possibly expect, including a list with MSRP's.  I am very sure it said 2007, that's why I wondered if they are actually going to be available.  Maybe I'll just give them a call, for all the good it'll probably do.

Yup I've got the hard copy catalog. I picked it up at my local dealer's place at least a month ago I guess.

I guess you deserve that for the great community you've provided for us all. Now if it was anyone else, I'd be asking them to send it to me  :D

Hey all, just thought I'd mention that up here in Canuckistan these doubles have been around for at least a year or so under the Baikal name.  I've never seen one stamped Remington.

The few that I've actually handled have all been in .30-06, apparently no one has gotten a .45-70 yet.  I was very interested in the bigger gun, but grabbed an '06 when it went on sale at a local shop.  Haven't played with it too much yet, factory loads only so far.  I mounted a Bushnell 3200 2-7 scope on it using a one-piece rail-type mount designed and sold for airguns, that fits perfectly onto the rib on the barrel.  It's held up now to about 300 rounds of factory stuff.  The gun basically shoots two decent groups (around 1 1/2 inches @ 100 yards), one out of each barrel.  I haven't tried working up a load that prints to the same POI from both tubes.  The barrels print around 3 to 4 inches apart @ 100 with most loads I've tried.  It's quite light and handy, has reasonably crisp and shootable triggers, and is finished well enough for the money.  It has an adjustment screw mounted between the barrels, under the rib, that is meant to regulate the barrels to shoot together.  Sadly, the adjustment works in the horizontal plane, but the discrepancy in my gun is in the vertical plane i.e. the left barrel shoots higher than the right.

Still, I think it was worth the money, as it is quite a unique gun in a safe full of typical bolts and levers.  I smoked a coyote with it a couple of days ago, so it's gotta stay around for a while at least.

Good luck finding one over there.  I think you'll enjoy it if you do get one.
