Cleaning your Handi rifle
« on: February 03, 2007, 11:24:36 AM »
Do you guys take the barrel off your Handi whenever you clean it?  I know you can't get to some areas without doing that.  Is there a downside to taking the barrel off often, like excessive wear on any of the parts?

If a Handi is shooting 1/2MOA I would definitely not take it apart to clean it. Just be careful not to get any cleaner or oil on the latch. Occasional complete disassembly may be required to lubricate the pin and completely degrease the latch and lug.

brake parts cleaner in an aerosol can.  Just take the wood or plastic parts off and spray the crap out of it, make sure to get oil back on the outer parts (keeping the inside dry) so they dont start to rust.

I usually pull the barrel after hunting season..just to do a complete cleaning on them..but as what has been said..I don't if they are shooting real good..I use a gun vise to hold it good..and take my time using a bore guide..I use long q-tips to clean the chamber out..and usually use a rubbing alcohol..then add back a little Rem-oil to it before storing it over nite...If it is going to sit any longer..I'll swab the bore down good with rem oil...

I degrease with ethanol as it has a dual purpose. Degrease a little, sip a little---- just kidding ;D

I appreciate your replies.  I was under the mistaken idea that I should use gun grease on the latch and lug to reduce wear on the softer barrel material.  Glad I hadn't gotten around to it.

Thanks.

Most of H&R's accuracy complaints are solved by cleaning and drying the latch as reported by their gunsmiths, so yes, make sure they're clean and dry before shooting, it's not hard to do and will make a difference. ;)

So it is or not necissary to disassemble the gun before using the aerosol degreaser?

I don't recommend you spray it down and get any on the stock or finish, it may damage it. ;) There are also cleaner/lubes that do both like Hornady One Shot, clean it off the latch and shelf after applying it tho.
