Son "Handis" his first buck
« on: January 24, 2008, 04:08:08 PM »
I bought my 13 year old a .44 mag handi to use as his "Mississippi muzzle loader". His first day out with it (last Sat) he got a nice 6 point. He has killed quite a few does, even one with a bow this season but the horns have always seemed to elude him. Sat. was the first day of the Mississippi primitive weapon season so he broke out his new handi.( the handi in calibers .38 and above is considered a primitive weapon in my state) On Sat. evening he got in a climber where I had seen several bucks and put a good lung shot on this six point @ about 60 yards. The buck made it anly about 50 yards and left a good blood trail. FYI He was shooting a 240 gr. Rem softpoint.

Nice buck for a first!

My first buck had 5 pts. and I was about the same age.

I remember that deer and all the fine details just like it was yesterday.

Great deer and a great Dad!

Congratulations to you both!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Nice buck.  Tell him I said "Congrats" as horns eluded me for a number of years.  I took a button buck some years back (thought it was a doe - I didn't see the buttons until I noticed 'something else' when it was time to field dress it  :-[).  In 2006, I finally got my horns (at 39 YO) - a 6pt that didn't look as nice as his.  Great job!!

We hunt near West (the town) Mississippi. My best friend owns 180 acres west of West in Carol county which is where this deer was killed.  We are also in a camp on the east side of West in Atalla county near the Big Black river.

Congrats!! Sharing that experience with your kids is one of the things you will always remember. My boys are grown now & we talk about our hunts from time to time, great stuff.
