HAMMER BOB???????????
« on: February 14, 2007, 02:05:27 PM »
I read something in here about "hammer bob" I am not sure what the was but I was wondering if anyone could help me I think it was something that Quickdtoo had wrote. I dont know wht it was but it struck my curiosity because it sounded like something that I could do that might allow me to use a medium or even a low mount scope ring. I am probably WAY off as i normally am. But any info will be greatly appreciated. Ans just ncase any of you ask I have not been able to shoot the 25-06 yet. Too darn cold!!!!!!!! Had one nice day but it was our anniversary. So I will let you guess what I was doing.

Read the FAQs, it's in there under "low profile hammer modification". ;)

Here's a link to the same problem asked last week
http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/smf/index.php/topic,111376.0.html
The work that I did  took maybe 3 hours, what with all the trials, reassemblys and what not. Got a dremel?

Elkslayer it is funny that you mentioned that posting I to put a Bushnell 3x9x40 Trophy on my 25-06. And yes that magnification ring is so big on that scope that it needs the shorter hammer or the SEARS TOWER FOR RINGS!!!!!!!!! The only rings i could find at the time were those see through and I am NOT going to put those onthere even if it had iron sights. I HATE those things. And yes to answer your question I do have a dremel

It would have been real easy to to just 'bob' the hammer, but that did.nt really work because of where I wanted the eyepeice of the scope, which puts the power ring ( adjustment ring ) directly above the hammer. So I had to carry that hammer bob a bit further, turned out to be fun. If you look at my photos, you can see where and how I notched the hammer spur, took seconds with a dremel and a grind-stone. I aslo ground a small notch on the front ( chamber side) of the hammer so that the hammer spur would fit lower on the hammer. The barrel release button is now approx 2/3 the size that it was, I cut away at least an 1/8 off the back side, and then changed the conture with a grind-stone, ground off the back edge. Apply your choice of blueing. I now have 3/16" clearance from the top of the hammer to the bottom of the power ring of my scope. By the way, this is also a .25-06, I love that rifle.

Just to  help clairify things, I've added an arrow to the photo showing the notch on the hammer

I felt that I needed to notch the hammer because I did'nt want to remove any more of the hammer spur, was afraid that any more would weaken it.

That is crazy that same gun!!!! LOL small world. Well that is great to know that you love that gun. If you look t my previous post I didnt know what caliber to buy. So many choices. Now I cant find time to shoot it. I will say this though it is clean as a whistle!!!!  :D All I have had time to do with it. I got some rings that work great they are weaver quad lok(I Know I know ALUMINUM) but for 12 bucks would you pass them up.  And they are the extension model I have never used this kind but I will get pics they do make them in steel for those of you that have to have steel. Anyways it even brought the scope back to a very comfortable position with the eye relief. I will get pics up as soon as I can. I am at work right now so gotta go.

I have often wondered if the hammer could be put in a vice and heated enough to tap it to where it would point in line with the bore of the barrel, when in the un-cocked position.  Not sure if it would make contact with the receiver when cocked or not though.  Seems like a lower profile would help a lot, and still give plenty of leverage.

I am no expert on this at all but I would think heating hot enough so you could bend it would make it weak.

If you read my low profile hammer mod, you'll see that I heated it to cherry red to anneal the hammer so I could drill and tap it, and it works fine. It could always be heated a bit more, bent and heated again and quenched in motor oil to reharden it again if needed. It may still need to be trimmed to bend the spur enough without bending the impact part of the hammer since the spur is so thick.

It's easy Handi!! The hardest part is keeping the punch from slipping off the pin heads and marking the frame when knocking them out!! The rest is simple. See the FAQs and Help trigger info.
