does twist make a difference

Do you have to go from low left to high right  -  /  or can you also use the opposite  -  \     or does it make a difference which way the joint goes on the patch?

Information I have read recommends applying the patch in a direction so that it gets tighter traveling down the barrel. That is, it would be different for a gun with a left hand rifling twist than for a gun with a right hand rifling twist. Yes. some rifles have a left hand twist. I was told that is common on english guns, and I have some Thompson-Center TCR barrels with left hand twists.

I was always careful to wrap the paper so it "tightened" when traveling down the barrel.  Last batch I got my brain twisted instead and wrapped the other way.  Couldn't tell the difference.  Your rifle/paper/bullet combination may or may not do the same.

Pardon my ignorance, but how could it tighten or loosen if the paper is jammed between the bullet and the rifling ?

Figuratively  speaking.  That's why I put quotation marks around "tightened.
