small one cup coffee pot, for over a fire/stove
« on: September 10, 2004, 06:38:47 PM »
I am looking for a small coffee pot, that I can put over a stove, and or fire, to make one cup of coffee.

PlEASE HELP

I now use my "big" pot and it is just too big, when I am out with my hounds, it is nice to stop for a few minutes and have a cup of "boiled, shepherders, cowboy " whatever coffee,

Thanks

Clint

You can buy one cup coffee bags just like tea bags and use a steel cup.  They work great.  Camping stores have a 12oz? steel mug I just put it on my little store and Wha La coffee.  The coffee might not be the greatest depending on what you are used to but at least it is coffee.  Maxwell House makes the one cup bags.  Give it a try

Azcoyhunter,

If your style of camping lends itself to it as mine does, try using one of the Starbucks (or other brands) press pot cup.  You boil water in your cook kit on your stove and pour it into the press cup, then add a heaping teaspoon of coffee, let it steep, press the filter unit down and you have a normal tasting cup of coffee.  Cleanup is easy too since you just take out the lid/filter and rinse it off.

Only downside I can see is if weight is a consideration for your type of camping since these are stainless steel and not ultra light.  They are thermal though and you could use it for soup or whatever other hot liquids you take on the campout.

Just thoughts . . .

Well if you're going to put a pot on the fire, or stove, and you aren't a weight freak, then get a stainless pot. Target used to sell them. Cabelas has them. They come in a bunch of sizes. Much better than aluminum or enameled steel.

I recently bought a Java Press, the 10oz size. Works pretty good and I can use it as a cup too. I think it cost me $11. I drink from it directly, although it's not the best design for that.

Check these out:

http://www.porterproducts.com/

They have a combination coffee press that is also an insulated travel mug in one. Make your coffee and drink from the same cup. Looks cool. I read about them on bakcpacker.com  I'll be ordering one for this fall dear season.

azcoyhunter, I use a big sky bistro like the one pictured on the porterproducts site. I bought mine from montana coffee traders. You do need a way to boil the water, a 1 lb coffee can with a bailing wire bail works great. Carry your coffee in a zip-lock bag, and don't forget a sack to put your boiling pot in so you don't get soot all over yourself. Hope this helps, Byron

I've used several methods.  One is a GI canteen cup with the stand and a "heat tab" or use the canteen cup on a little folding "esbit" stove.  Heat the water and use a coffee-bag like someone mentioned above.  I've done that while out hunting or day-hiking and it works well.

Another method, and probably my preferred method is to use a "one-cup" filter of some sort with an insulated mug and boil water in my cookset.  these filters are available pretty much everywhere.  I've seen ones that Melita sells in grocery stores.  I think if you go to a fancy cooking store they might have something like another one or two that I;'ve picked up over the years.  One is a stainless one cup device that just sits on top of your cup and you pour the water through it.  It doesn't not require paper filter like the Melita kind.  It just has holes in it like the old percolator-style baskets.

If you go to a backpacking store like REI you might find one like I just picked up.  I think the manufacturer is MSR.  It is a little "gold foil" filter that will sit in the top of a standard insulated mug or travel mug.  Works pretty well.

Personally I'm a Tommy cooker, steel cup, coffee bag person. But I'm not a big coffee connoisseur.  gino :)
