Need help with 45-70

I am buying a H&R Buffalo classic with the 32" Barrel. This is my first 45-70, I reload for all my pistols and rifles everything from 9mm Luger to 300 Weatherby. My Question is in my reloading manuals they show 3 seperate listings. One for Trap Door, one for Marlin Lever Action and Ruger #1, Where does the H&R Buffalo classic fall? And would appreciate any Info.

They will handle the heavy loads. But don't know if your shoulder will. Most shooters are limited by recoil, not action strength.

You can shoot the Marlin loads in it no problem, and the lower Ruger #1 loads also, but it will beat you to death with them. I shoot black powder in my Buffalo Classic, it works great and you can shoot all day and not get tired of it.

I have found that i give out at about top end lever action loads and the H&R says give me more , granted the action will take just about whatever you feed it , but sooner or later every firearm has a point were it is too much and the frame will start to streach or the lug will get wore to the point that the action will get loose .

I have a fealing you will give in to it first though .  ;D

You won't believe this but I called my local gunshop where I have bought several guns from in the past to see if they had a buffalo classic in 45-70 because others I have talked to said they were hard to find. My friend said he had one that another guy had ordered but the deal fell through. I went down to the shop and scarfed it up. My wife said I was nuts because we are having a snow storm here in St.Louis but went any way. Now I am a new proud poppa of a 45-70 Buffal Classic. might have to wait a day or two to shoot it though, can't see that far with the blowing snow. LOL

As stated above, the recoil will probably beat you to death before you hit the limits of the gun.   I shoot some really stout 250-300gr loads in both, my Handi and my BC.  I'm not as sensative to recoil as some people, but once in get into mid Ruger #1 territory I start saying ouch and checking for hickey type marks on my shoulder.

Guess I don't see the recoil problem w/ the 45/70, unless your really jacking up the load.
About the same a .300 wsm or .35 whelen.

That's cuz those are trapdoor loads, the lowest level of the 3 load levels, step up to levergun loads, and you'll notice a recoil problem in an unmodified Handi/BC, I guarantee it! That's why most folks stick to the trapdoor levels, they enjoy shooting too much!!  ;D

Given the choice between Ruger level loads in a Handi or 3" 12ga. slugs , i take the slugs on most days . ( OUCH )  ;D

No I picked it up at Dunn's in Pevely. Are you located close to Fenton? I live just south of 141 on old 21.

My experience with the BC and handi is this. You shoot Marlin and low #1 type loads, your gun is going to shoot loose and accuracy is going to pot after a couple hundred rounds.  I am not the only person that has experienced this. In extreme cases, guns have popped open at the shot. I have been informed that the gun needs to go back to the manufacturer for repair if this happens and they (the manufacturer) will make it good. Luckily I have not gotten to this point, but some of my friends have.
