243 Question
« on: February 09, 2007, 05:36:22 AM »
Twelve hour nights at work leave me with too much time to think.  Has anyone ever tried a fix on the 243 ejection issues by using 307 Win. brass necked down to 6mm?  The rimmed case should eject much better.  308 and 307 dies are the same, with different shell holders.  It is possible to make 243 from 308 with just a ride thru the sizing die.  So why couldn't you use 307 brass to make a rimmed 243?  You would have to make the rim cut in the chamber and modify the ejector, but that doesnt seem to be too big of a deal.  What do you guys think?  Side note, the 307 conversion should help ejection on a 308 also. Is this a reasonable idea, or is it fix for a non-existent problem?

I don't have any problems with ejection with a little ejector tuning and a chamber polish unless I shoot too hot a load or shoot a dirty/oily chamber/ammo. If you still have problems, there could be a defect in the chamber that needs attention by H&R CS or a sizing issue in your handloading procedures needs a change. ;)

I have never understood the perception that the rim or actually the lack of a rim is the cause of stuck cases.

I think more of the reason is that many rimmed chamberings have lower pressure loadings.

I have to agree 110% with ya there, Bill. I've had stuck brass in my .405 Winchester when I pushed the pressure too high with near max loads of Benchmark, so the problem isn't limited to rimless cartridges. Pushing the pressure limit high enough to induce sufficient frame flex, and you'll get stuck brass in any cartridge, rimmed or otherwise. :-\
