200 gr xpb for 454 casull?
« on: November 19, 2006, 09:55:12 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm interested in trying the new 200gr Barnes xpb spitzer that they use in the 460 S+W in the 454 Casull. I'm wondering if it will work and has anyone tried it yet?  Will the bullet stabelize? I have the Magnum Research BFR in 7 1/2 with a 1-20 twist. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,  Rob...

I know nothing about the bullet your spreaking of, but in general you have more trouble stablizeing heavy bullet than lite bullets. The reason is the the longer the bullet the faster you have to spin it to get it to stablize.

I can't imagine the 460 S&W not providing enough velocity to give that 200 gr. bullet plenty of spin!

Rob,

It's not going to stabilize, I had the same "great" idea you had. They are just too long with that spire-point tip.

How about that bullet in the 454 casull Encore?  Would it work?

If you have a pretty fast twist and/or a long enough barrel to get it up to speed, you might be able to do it. I couldn't say.
Downside is that it is pretty expensive to try it out. I'd be happy to sell you some the I have in inventory at cost if you'd like to not have to buy a box.

Thanks for the offer but I already have some heads.  I called TC and they told me that the rate of twist for their 460 SW and 454 barrels are the same, 1-16.  If that is the case there is no reason why these bullets shouldn't work.  The 454 isn't that much slower than the 460.  I' going to us a 10 inch barrel so that should be plenty fast enough. I'm going to call barnes and see if I can get a starting point for these loads.  I'm probably going to use H110.  When I get to it I let you know how I made out.

By looking at the catalog-bullet picture -if they are accurate for size they are no longer then the 250gr XPB for the 454 Casull so they should be able to fit your BFR or even my SRH. I might just have to get some and try them! As far as pushing them fast enough that should not be a problem as I can get 240's going 1900+ fps in my SRH! so 2000 fps with these little 200 gr bullets should be easy! ;D

PS Let me know if Barnes actually coughs up some data for use in the 454! But what I figure with H110 start with 36gr and work up!
