need help action screw hole win 70 stock

I bought a 670 stock for my M70 Winchester.  It is great.  Cheap inletting, but I sanded it and sealed with poly inside.  For $25, I can't ask for more.  But............the front action screw hole was chipped.  I used a Dremel tool and had a BEAUTIFUL hole routed out.  I looked up and BAM! the Dremel nicked something and the tool skipped.  I tried a save and just decided to quit while I was ahead. 


The hole now is 5/8" at its widest.  The best plan that I can come up with is a 3/4" Forstner bit.  May to center it I could put the shank of the bit into the bolt hole and trace around the bit to line things up.  Either way I am going to town for a drill press (need one anyway) to keep things square.  Does anyone have some ideas here? 

The sharp eyed observer will note a washer under the action screw.  It works.  Either the M70 action screw is too long or the previous owner made this crappy bolt hole himself.

If it were mine, and I had access to a lathe, I would turn an escucheon and epoxy it in at the correct height to make everything work. Or if I were interested in accuracy, I would pillar bed the rifle at the same time so everything fits properly and looks good.

First thing to do is fill the drilled hole with wood and glue it in.  You may find some round stock that is the right size.  Then you can drill a very small pilot hole exactly in the right place.  Then drill what ever size hole you want and it will be centered where you want it.  Then fill the larger hole with round wood stock glued in and drill the proper size screw hole in that.  Here is one half way done in a Remington 581 stock.  Larry
