question about 45 long colt.
« on: February 13, 2007, 02:15:41 AM »
Okay I am new here so I am going to ask a silly question. I know that the SB1 frame is meant for shotguns only and all of that, but I see that they offer a 45 long colt/410 barrel for it. So shouldn't it be able to handle a normal 45 long colt barrel for the SB2 frame?

Yes the SB1 will handle the pressure of the 45LC but if H&R is true to form they will NOT fit any rifle barrels to the shotgun frames , as for the diffrence in pressure between the 44 mag and the 45LC there is quite a bit more in the mag.

The 44 mag will run as high as 39000CUP and the 45LC will only run about 15000CUP per Hodgdon's web data .

Stimpylu32 is absolutely correct with regards to SAAMI specs.

I would use the heavy & high pressure (approx 32,000) reloads in an SB2 framed Handi.  Those are listed in many reloading manuals as RUGER, etc. ONLY loads.  When working up these loads, start low (consult the manual=not TOO LOW) and look for excessive pressure signs while working up, i.e. flattened primers and cases "sticking" in the chamber (difficult to extract).

:o  WARNINGS:  I would NEVER try such loads in an SB1, and I would NEVER exceed "RUGER etc. ONLY" max loads in any published loading manual [[but that's just me]].

If you wait a bit, you can get a 45 colt carbine barrel that has a much shorter throat than the 45/410 with no sights, but it may be a while before it's available as an accessory barrel, it's new for this year, it's on the list, but accessory barrels aren't usually available until spring/summer.

Will the colt carbine be available for the SB1 frame?
