44 mag or 50 JRH

I have a 44 mag that I realy like and works great for most of all my hunting but I still realy like single action revolvers. Some time in the next year I was planning to find an old model vaguero in 357 mag and have it line bored to 44 mag by clements. Then I found out about the BFR and that they are making them in 50 JRH. I could have a 50 cal revolver that uses .50 dia bullets instead of .510's and it would cost me about the same as the gunsmithing alone.

  I was going with 44 mag because I load for it already and ammo/components are available anywhere in the USA. The 50 JRH on the other hand can shoot bigger and heavier bullets and I think would have a small enough powder capasity that there would be little problem coming up with reduced power loads. The other big thing is after shooting 320 bullets in a 44 with a stiff charge of powder I don't think I can take too much more recoil. Is a 50 cal SA going to handle recoil better than a Dan Wesson 44 mag 8"? Do I need another handgun? NO. But I would like a nice sturdy SA for woods bumming and maybe for an elk hunt or trip to alaska.

An 8" Heavy barrel .44 DW will have significantly less recoil than a .475 Linebaugh, .500JRH, or .500WE, assuming "standard" level, more or less full-power loads in each. Of course a handloader can make each of them more or less powerful, and thus significantly affect the felt recoil, making any of these big 3 almost a pussycat. Personally, when I want or feel that I need a .475 or a .50 for a hunting application, then I want a "full power" or "standard" load, not a powder-puff, so that's the way I load mine. On a purely personal basis, If I wanted a BFR, I'd pick the .475 Linebaugh, not the .500 JRH, but a big-bore lover should enjoy both. I know that my FA .475's and .500 WE certainly aren't for sale.

You know what they say ( IF YOU HAVE TO ASK)!! Seriously before you plunk down any money beg borrow or steal one and take it out and shoot the crap out of it and see if its something you want. The recoil is definately in a different leauge then a 44 with the 50s.

I don't know where you are located but there is a seminar here in Jackson, MS in late May I believe.  MS Hitman is organizing that one if you are able to make it here. 

Lloyd, how about driving down here, the drive really isn't that bad.  I used to make the drive up to Kalamazoo yearly, how far are you from there.  I'll also be up your way this Summer it appears.  I think the sister in law is finally going to get married.  The wedding will be in Monroe or something like that or in Toledo, who knows, I'll bet you they'll tell me like the week before its time to travel.  Take care.  GS

Problem with comming down there is its as far a Cody and when  go to Cody it gives me a chance to visit my sister in montana. If you come up to monroe stop by im just 400 miles north of there ;D

Linebaugh is having a seminar down here in Texas too. Ya'll just drive on south and I bet we will have more fun than you will at your sisters house!

400 miles is a stretch from Monroe.  where in the world are you up there? ;D I have no clue where anything is up there until I start looking at the map when I get there.  We may just have to meet out in Cody sometime.  That might be a fun trip anyway.  Never have been to that area of the country and have always wanted to go so I'm sure I'll make the trip at sometime.  Take care.  GS
