Does anyone here use the 26" HUNTSMAN barrel?
« on: February 11, 2007, 08:39:03 AM »
I really want to get one of these added to my receiver that's at H&R right now for a trigger job. I'd like to know what loads of 777 or Pyrodex are being used and what bullets or bullet/sabot combinations are being used and at what efficiency levels.
I think the 26" barrel should work quite nicely with about 110-115 grains 777 and a Hornady 265gr. 444 marlin bullet in a 50/44 cal. sabot.
Anyone with any info on the HUNTSMAN barrel in the 26" configuration?

Sorry, I have one but have not shot it enough to determine what works best. I plan on doing that before this next hunting season. I have hopes to be able to shoot heavy conicals as I only elk hunt and the 300gr. sabot/bullets have not always performed as I would like. I have seen posts of good results with heavy conicals in the Sidekick/Huntsman rifles. I have converted mine to the .25ACP primer setup and that looks very promising for lack of blowby into the firing pin area.

lik2hunt,

There are a lot more 26" Sidekicks out there than 26" Huntsmans. The barrels are identical, so you can use their information. I have a 24" SS Huntsman that shoots everything from 200 grain saboted bullets to 460 grain NE or BS conicals.

Keith,

My 24" SS Huntsman shoots 430-460 grain all lead conicals over 80 grains 777 FFFG, and fiber gasket wad extremely well. I get them sized at .503, and they are slip fit (slight engraving). The Huntsman shoots as good as my Whites. I took the li'l 5x5 with the Huntsman and a 430 grain White Super Slug (obsolete) over the above charge. He went 56 yards and was all done. ;)

I'd really like to have a detailed briefing about the 25ACP conversion. I really am interested in trying this for mine as the blowby problem just really gets on my nerves....... >:(.
PM or here on the forum is ok. I actually live within driving distance of the guys selling them on Ebay and have been told by them that we could meet and do a sale and save the shipping charges that way.
I have the 24" barrel already and have a lot of blowby and at 90 gr. 777, some unburned powder. My best load to date for the 24" barrel has been a 45 cal. 300gr. XTP in a 50/45 sabot over 76.2 gr. 777. I'd really like to get the Hornady 44 cal. 265 grainers up to around 2000 FPS out of a 26" barrel, or even from my 24" barrel would work. Terminal performance of these bullets is phenominal at those speeds.

The .25ACP conversion is a replacement breechplug with a recessed chamber that will accept a .25ACP brass case. Since it is a small primer case you can use any primer from a small pistol to a small rifle magnum primer so you can select how much energy you want. The case has to be primed and deprimed for reuse. If you are not a reloader the equipment to do the job is simple and inexpensive. Another benefit is the breechplug has a hex head shape so you can use a standard socket and extension to remove it rather than the special tool required with the standard plug. If you need more information email me at klewisinc@msn.com. Small rifle Primers are a lot less expensive than the special muzzleloading 209 primers.
