Rain protection on barrells
« on: February 11, 2007, 01:32:08 PM »
Hello, I am new to muzzleloading. I am going to get an H&R sidekick soon, and have a question I have never seen. In the past, a common way to keep the elements (rain/moisture/dirt/etc) out of the end of a rifle barrell outdoors was to take and cut off a finger of a latex glove, roll it up like a condom and roll it over the end of the barrell. High velocity rounds did not care and the accuracy was not compromised to any great degree. Will this work on a muzzleloader, especially since the moisture factor is a much higher concern with this type of shooting? Or will the accuracy be affected and if so, to what degree? I had planned on testing this myself, but since I have to wait a bit to try it, I thought I would ask. Thanks.

They are kinda like the finger cots, and it should be gone before your bullet ever gets there. The air in front of the bullet will blow it off uness you have it taped down.

Yup, tape, balloons, finger cots, Muzzle Mitts, they all work. Duct tape works best for me.

I have used black electrician tape. Seems not to affect the accuracy of the bullet. ;D

Electrical tape here too.  I find that my muzzleloader needing a fouling shot effects the placement of the shot more than a strip or two of tape over the end of the barrel.
