Powder Choice For .30-06 In Semi Auto

I am going to be handloading for my Remington 742, and 7400, in .30-06. I will be using Hornady 180 grain BTSP bullets. I would like to keep my velocitys in the 2700 FPS range. Looking thru several reloading manuals, IMR 4350, will do this. However, I have read that a good powder choice for semi handloads, is a powder that is neither too fast, or too slow. I know that 4350 is a slower burning powder, and would like to know if anyone has tried this in a semi auto rifle.

One of my hunting buddies uses my 165 grain loads with IMR 4350 in his Browaning Auto (BAR) with the best accuracy (one MOA) that he ever achieved with his 30-06 BAR.

I've been doing the same research lately, and keep finding 4895 and Varget seem to be the preferred powders for 7400s in 30-06.  I have a can of 4350 that I'd like to use up though.  Maybe someone will share a pet load.

3031, 4895, 4350 and 4064 are the best choices.  These function best in both semi-autos and bolt guns.  You need the faster burning powders to cycle the semi-autos.  4064 and 4350 give factory duplication velocities, 3031 gives you an accuracy load at nearly 2700'/sec.  50 gns of 4350 gives an accuracy load but at only 2470'/sec.

An old favorite of Garand shooters is 47.5 gns of 4895 for 2650'/sec which is right on the nose for the mil-spec sniper load for the 06.  HTH.  Mikey.

The two I use with a 150 grain are 51 grains of Imr 4064, or 57.5 of Imr 4350, they are both really accurate. I posted a message under semi auto and pump  section on how to accurize your 742, if you have time read it, It has worked on several rifles that I have done . You will be surprised at the group improvement. Will get you close to 1 inch .

I use 57 grains of IMR 4350 with 165 grain bullets with CCI 200 primers.

Use a small base die and trim often.  Been there.

 Did I mention varget for remington autoloaders
