Need info on pig hunting in Missouri
« on: November 07, 2006, 06:52:12 AM »
Guys,

My daughter, age 13, wants to go pig hunting this winter.  I am told there are wild pigs on Ft. Leonardwood, which is in the middle of Missouri.  A person can hunt them if they do a little bit of paperwork with the Army.  But some folks tell me the pigs have been pretty well shot out.  Have any of you ever hunted on Ft. Leonardwood or any place else in Missouri?  I am thinking of using bait such as one would do for bear hunting.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Mark

I tried it once and didn't see a pig for 2 days.  For me it was really an excuse to go on a float trip but I had hoped to shoot a hog.  This was 7 or so years ago.

There are at least three fenced preserves in MO that would be much better choices to take your daughter for a hog hunt. I don't know about Leonardwood but most military bases seem to make it pretty hard for non active duty and non employees to hunt there. Some make it impossible. They also almost always limit you to shotguns with slugs and I seriously doubt they'd allow baiting.

There is a Show-Me Safaris and a High Adventure preserve and one other that right now I just cannot think of the name of. They all usually advertise in the backs of magazines like North American Hunter and American Hunter from the NRA so contact with either might get you some info. If you're interested I likely could round up the info to contact one or more of them for you.

Hey Mark,

I don't know if you've taken care of business on your end, but just in case, I recently moved away from missouri but still have information on hogs in the state. The populations are down significantly, though you can still find them on public land around Truman and Wapapello. Eric Lemon (Eric.G.Lemons@mvs02.usace.army.mil) is the Natural Resources Park Ranger for Wapapello and was happy to help. He gave me a map (I'm having trouble uploading the map, but will gladly email it to anybody wnating a copy) of where hogs have been seen in the recent past and offered to give me any updates on locations and activity if I call or email a couple weeks before coming his way.

At Truman, Danny Sandersfeld (Danny.L.Sandersfeld@nwk02.usace.army.mil) would be your point of contact. He's also a good guy who will do what he can to put you on some hogs. He doesn't have a map readily on hand but will mail one to you with some areas circled.

Anyways, I hope this is of use to you. I never got the chance to use the information, so I don't know how the hunting is in those areas currently. If you get out, though, be sure to let us know how it goes.

Thanks for that info.  I plan to contact those fellows and see what shakes out.  Our plan is to the hunt after the holidays and camp out as well.  Winter camping is a great deal of fun as no one else is out there.  Getting a pig will just be a plus!

If you try the Truman guy I'd be interested to know what they say.  My family has a place near Warsaw but I've never heard of, or seen hogs near there.  The late season duck hunting can be phenomenal though.

Gamestalker, can you please email me the Wappapello map?

Thanks.

As far as Fort Lost in the Woods, you have to sit thru a 20 minute safety video and then you can hunt. Hogs are on the south and east ends. Some even wonder off the fort on the south side along Rubidoux creek by Hwy 17. Not a lot of hogs but they are there.

Regarding the lands around Truman Reservoir:  A lot of this land is owned by the Army Corps but managed by the state Department of Conservation.  The state folks might have some better ideas about where to find the pigs.  They have an office in Clinton, you can probably find the phone number on their website.  If the Clinton staff can't answer your question, they can probably put you in touch with the area manager who can.  I hunted Truman once a couple Januarys ago.  Found a fair amount of hog sign, but didn't see any pigs.

IMshooter, spectr17 pretty much summed it up for Ft. Wood's. After 9/11, it was of course, shut down to civilian hunting, but they reopened it shortly after.  The terrain is rough, and the hogs are few, but yes, there are some around. Most other locations in MO have seen the hog populations decrease, unfortunetely.

Have ya made the hunt yet anywhere?

Dictator, have you been to Justin's yet?  Would like to hear your report, as well.

Hi Mark,
Where are you at in Missouri?  I am in Joplin.  I have some friends that have taken a few hogs around Stockton Lake?  They have done alot more walking than anything else.  I have the last two years hunted at Blackmountainexotics.com in Henryietta Oklahoma.  It is $200 a person.  I have taken a hog each time I have been there.  It is fenced(this ain't canned hunt, I would not do that), but it is 140 acres of the burly stuff you have ever seen.  You would be lucky to see or get more than a 50 yard shot.  Check out the web site.  One thing I liked no trophy fees and no hidden cost.  For a extra $20-25, they will skin it and quarter, put in your coolers for transportation.  Just trying to help give you some ideas. :)

Deerman12,
That is a good price for a pig hunt.  Thanks.  I had heard that there were some pigs around Stockton lake.  Right now we are iced in - will have to wait a while before pursuing any pigs.

Sorry it took so long to respond. I had a great time at Stone Creek. Justin & Joe have a nice facility and lot of pigs and timber. I shot a smaller, less than 100 lb, with 8) a 300 win mag. as I wanted to get a big guy as a test for my 600 rifle. I am definitely going back and will take a night vision scope and hunt them after dark. The 600 did draw blood on this Spanish goat. The bullet opened up to 1.37" and penetrated the length of the ram doing tremendous damage. Next time. I'm going to try for a big guy during the day w/ the 600 and then at night with a 308 Saiga and a night scope. This sounds like fun  8)

You might give Justin or Joe a call @ Stone Creek a call. If you're in SE MO. they can't be too far away in Edgar Springs and they have a nice place. They're heavily book on the weekends, but pretty open during the week. If you talk to them, Tell them Joe & Robin from Iowa had fun and say hy.

Pretty much the way it is anymore. Lots of folks have contributed to the erradication in most areas of MO.

You might give http://www.cedarcanyonranchllc.com/ a try in mid Okla. I hunted there a couple of times with the previous owners but haven't been back in almost 2 yrs. Good time and nice place.
