Finaly got me a BC
« on: February 15, 2007, 10:04:42 AM »
Hurray, I got me a Buffalo Classic 45-70 in today what a sweet gun. I can wait tell this weekend with some warmer weather. I have some 405gr cast loads all loaded up for her.  One thing I might do is put some lead shot in the stock for some extra weight. Its a little lighter then my Lyman GPR 54 I like those heavy guns alot more stable shooting them offhand. Now got to come up with a name for her. My NEF 10ga turkey  is Thunder stick, my 243ultra is sniper, HELP ME COME UP WITH A NAME PLEASE LOL

I measured the throat of this gun the longest I can run these 405gr out to is 2.750" is the throat going to be long enough to load some 500+gr bullets in for long range shooting?

One other thing has anyone stripped and browned there barrel I was going to do this to my Lyman GPR so I thought while I'm doing one might as well do both. I like the look of a browned barrel makes them look more authintic (sp) The next thing is if you have how did you heat the barrel up to brown it. Iv'e heard guys that put them in ovens to heat them but the barrels are to long on both of these guns, would a propane tourch work?

I can not tell you any thing about browning the barrells,
But every body needs a 45-70, thence you need a 30-30.
A nother rifle that is a fun to shot. Congrats for getting a B C.
Good luck and have fun. Marv.

I thought about smokey because I was going to mostly shoot blackpowder in it but I do like thumper. As for the 30-30 I dont have one in a nef but do in a old winchester 94 it was my wifes grandpas so it dosn't get used to much more of a family airlum (SP)

huntnut:  I browned my GPR.  I built it form the kit but it had several small parts that were blued.  I put them in a small cup of Coke for a couple of days.  That took of some of the blue, medium steel wool got the rest of it.  I've cold blued severl guns and you can usually remove blue with coarse/medium steel wool and a lot of elbow grease!  The LP torch works fine.  Just heat small sections and test it with a wet Q-tip.  When the wet Q-tip sizzles, the metal is hot enough to put the browning solution on.  I looking for a BC right now.  Lucky dog!

Congrats on the BC!! I've only used the cold browning methods, Laurel Mountain Forge works very well, I've done several barrels and locks with it, the only one I have left is a TC.

Coke or vinegar does a good job of removing blueing.  Some have reported good results using Naval Jelly (sp?).  The Birchwood Casey browning material works good using a propane torch for heat.   Multiple applications will deepen the brown, just card (rub with fine steel wool) between coats. The Birchwood Casey product can be used to do a slow "rust" brown, but it leaves a fairly rough finish.

huntnut,

I have a .243 Ultra unfired, I was wondering how far you can shoot yours accurately.   Thanks

My 243 ultra will shoot under MOA at 200yrds if I do my part thats as far as I have shot it at a target. My best at 100yrds is a ragged hole 5 shot 1 flier.
