The Springfield Government Issue 1911A1, as are all 1911 pattern pistols, are designed to be carried loaded, cocked and locked. 

Yes, they will handle +P ammo.  HTH.  Mikey.

Cocked and locked is the ONLY way to carry a 1911 as a LEO I carry a fullsize Kimber 8-12 hours a day and a series 80 colt commander the rest of the time and as a backup. As a range officer for the last five  the only ND's I have ever seen from a 1911 have been the result of people trying to thumb the hammer down.

I carry my SA Ultra Compact cocked and locked always. John Browning designed it to be carried that way and I wouldn't carry it any other way.
