Remington 770 (dressed up 710)
« on: February 15, 2007, 08:37:23 AM »
Seems Rem decided to dress up the the much maligned 710 and pass it off as a new model number.

http://www.remington.com/pdfs/07catalog-rifles.pdf

see pages 12 and 13 of the catalog

The stock looks a little better now, but I'm still not sold.  I know the stock was the main concern for alot of people, but my personal hang up is the jagged bolt slide and somewhat painful safety.  I havn't found anything online about it, and am very curious to see if anyone's seen the new version in stores, maybe even bought or shot one.

I went to wallyworld and fondled the 710 again just refresh my memory... and yeah... the safty is so hard to trip, the small metal lever actually hurts to try and throw....  Unless they fix that, I'd still rather have a savage... Walmart has the accutrigger savage packages for just $25 more.... The SPS may be better than both rifles, but I don't like the "non-game-spooking matte blue"(which feels ALOT like a parkerized finish).

I realize this is the empty conjecture of someone hoping and dreaming to buy a rifle sometime in the future, but I suppose bottom line is that I'm better off saving up to buy a Nice 700 BDL.

Just have to wait and see.  Been waiting for 1 1/2 years to buy a rifle, I suppose I can wait 6 more months.....

I dont care for the savages, but i think somone could do much better by just buying the cheep 700, or a used bdl/cdl or somthing of that nature.  I have seen some awsome deals on 700adl with the matte/synthetic setup and that is a world class rifle.

People love to slam the 710, but all of the ones I've seen/shot would do MOA with a couple of different loads.  That includes the .270, 30-06, and 7 Mag.  Yes, it is a departure from the traditional rifle.  So was the 700 when it was introduced so many years ago.   ;)

It does what it was designed to do, and it does it well:  Be a cheap rifle that you can throw in the back of the truck and leave there until you need it.  Not everyone wants to tinker with their rifle, like most of us.   Lots of people just desire a decent rifle to kill some animals with.  It amazes me how many people call it cheap and yet love the Tikka T3.  They have some similarities:  polymer bolt shroud, recoil lug in the stock, one action size......and I do believe that the 710 was introduced first.   :o

Now, before everyone jumps at the chance to drop the axe on me, I know that the T3 is a probably a better all around rifle.  I've had a couple, though, and I wasn't that impressed, really.  They are great values for the $$$, but I think that the  710 is too. IMHO, having owned a couple of T3's and having shot several 710's, I think that the 710 is a much more rugged rifle, while the T3 is more accurate on average.

As for the new 770, I think that it looks cheaper than the old 710.  At least the 710 has a classic style stock.  The 770 looks like a Gamo air rifle.   :P

Yeah, I know what you mean.  I have been thinking about getting one though, just to have a cheap spare rifle, since the Wally World nearby was selling them for $299.  I mean, you can't hardly get an old mauser of any kind for under 3 bills that's in any decent shape.  I mostly use in-line BP rifles, but sometimes a little extra reach comes in handy.  I'd have to put a different scope on it though, I am optics spoiled.  Too used to having quality glass to look through to settle for the $40 Sharpshooter.

Putting a pretty stock on a Remington 710 is as useful as putting a dress on Hillary Clinton. :P >:(

LOL, that made my day  :D

If you put a nice stock on a 710, youre still stuck with that poopy bolt. Add up the price of the gun/scope combo, now add in the price of the added stock and youre looking at a decent adl/bdl. Noooo thanks.

The only good thing on the 710 is the barrel.  Thats it.  Otherwise, its probaly the worst current production bolt gun.  JMHO.  Buy a 700.  You will NEVER regret it and can always get your money back
