Omega range report!
« on: January 29, 2007, 10:12:44 AM »
Well took my new Omega out for a test drive yesterday.  Wow it is truly a great gun. Got it at wal-mart for $111 its a Z5. Put a silver Simmons prohunter 3x9 40mm on her for a splash of color, matches the breechseal and trigger guard well.  I finally settled on a 245gr spitfire with 105 grs T7 3F, Win T7 primer, with this load at 100 yds it put 8 shots in a roll through a 1.5'' circle the first 3 were touching heck all 8 were touching when done and just a big hole in paper. My huntsman will do the same but not with so many powder and bullets combo's. The omega was really accurate with any load and powder combo( Only tried 4 different loads but all grouped well even the powerbelts shot well which my huntsman never shot very good always thought it was the bullet). I used TC 13 cleaner on one patch and one dry patch between shots.  I sighted in 2.5'' high at 100  It was only 6'' low at 200 with the above load.  Now for the most important thing, I shot about 30 shots and had no blowback! When cleaning the sealed breech area I barely had a smudge on the the white patch. I had just a little crud ring the 1st two shots after that I would barely feel it between shots. The gun loaded pretty easy some of the story's I have heard had me worried. I think some hogs are going to be in trouble the next few weeks.  I'm impressed!  ;D

LOVE my Omega as well. She's a Z5 too and if there is a negative about her its that I'm actually considering retiring my breechloaders and using her exclusively.I'm shooting 70 gr 3f T7 under T/C cheap shots lit by CCI400's in Variflame adaptors. My 100 yard groups are hovering in the 1 to 1 1/2 inch range with a muzzle velocity of 1600 fps. Terminal performance is ... dramatic to say the least. She mounts a 2x7 Leupy VX1 in Leupold detach mounts as primary, and I have a Savage 1919 target aperture rear sight matched up with the issue front sight for when desired/required.Had T/C fit a blued triggerguard to her. Looks evewn better and I have a gray laminate stock on my wish list as well.

Coop,

Sounds like you found a winner, and at a steal of a deal. I checked one of the Wal-Marts near where I was going to school last semester, but the Z-5's were all gone. As a matter of fact ALL of there guns were gone. :'( They had 3 left last month, but only had them marked down to $250, the clerk said they had marked them down to $150 and they were gone. I was looking to buy a couple for some trading material down the road, but it seems my timing is never good to get a deal like you got.

Don't neglect that Huntsman too much, she might just get jealous! ;D

Good luck on them hogs! 8)

I like what you are doing, double30. The minimalist approach. Shooting cheap lead slugs with only 70 grains of powder at  1,600 fps.
Glad you haven't fallen vitim to the "magnum mania" that is so common.
Think I will get an Omega and try the same thing.
Aim small don't miss.

I have the Z5 also , you got one heck of a deal,I did do the 25acp conversion and like it alot also.I just got a 340gr 45 cal. mold for bear and moose so I cast up a few and used mmp's orange sabots for the .457 cal. bullet and tried out 5 of them this afternoon to see how they would shoot out of the omega doing a spit patch between shots. During the winter months my target is only 60 yds. out but they all grouped in a 1 1/8" group off a bench with a nikon 3 by 9 scope which is good shooting for me,I'm sure you guys could have done much better,at 65,not so steady anymore , tired eyes etc. I did well for me.What surprised me was the first shot out of a clean barrel was right in the middle of them.I have been considering getting into swaging but maybe it won't be necessary after all.I forgot to add that I used 100 gr. of pyrodex rs.
Have fun with the new Omega
