« on: February 22, 2007, 02:01:04 PM »
HEY GUYS, IM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MY ULTRA VARMINT GUN AND I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD HELP ME OUT. FIRST OFF THE GUN IS A 243 AND ITS GOT A BIPOD AND IM SHOOTING 75 GRN V-MAX AMMO. NOW THE PROBLEM, I TOOK IT OUT THE OTHER DAY TO GET IT SIGHTED IN AND AT 25 YDS I WAS PRACTICALLY SHOOTING ONE HOLERS, BUT THEN I WENT TO 50 YDS AND MY GROUPS OPENED UP TO LIKE 3-4 INCHES AND IT WAS THROWING THE BULLETS ALL OVER THE PLACE, IM ABOUT READY TO UNLOAD THIS GUN BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD SEE IF YOU GUYS MIGHT HAVE ANY ANSWERS AS TO WHY ITS DOING THIS. I ALSO HEARD THESE GUNS ARE FINIKY WITH BIPODS ON THEM,  KEEP IN MIND AFTER I SHOT 40 ROUNDS OUT OF IT , I THEN WENT TO MY 300 WINNY AND SHOT 2, 3 SHOT GROUPS MEASURING JUST OVER A HALF IN AT 100 YDS SO I KNOW I WASNT FLINCHING WITH THE 243 ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

THANKS BILL,

Welcome aboard! One hole groups at 25yds doesn't show much except get you on paper. Try some different ammo, lots of .243 H&R/NEFs won't shoot the light stuff, either 85gr and below or 95gr and bigger, I'd say you got one that's gonna like the heavier stuff. Other than that, read the FAQs and Help sticky info on accurizing, clean it good, inside and out, make sure the latch and latch shelf are dry before each shooting session, make sure the trigger is pulled all the way to the rear each time. ;)

Tim

TRy some of the hints in FAQ and I'm sure it will shoot for you. The O ring made my 22 hornet superlight a tack driver. I have RTV bedded my ulra .243 barrel nut haven't got to try it yet because I split the end of the barrel from ice in the end. But we'll see when I get it back from being shortened to 20". Its was shooting about 1" with 55g btips and .75 witrh 87 g vmaxes before I had my wreck with it.  Hopfully it will at least shoot that good with the shorter barrel.

PS And Tim you da man. Hey I had no problem readin his post.

Sorry to hear about you iceident!! :'( Been there done that while elk hunting many years ago, missed the elk and blew the front sight off my rifle which became a carbine after a visit to my gunsmith!! :-[

Given the choice of all caps and caps where approapriate, most folks will choose the mix, many won't even read an all caps post. :(

New to the Internet? Many first time Internet users make the mistake of posting in ALL UPPERCASE CHARACTERS when they start posting or interacting with other users. Please understand that, on the Internet, USING ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING and deemed by the Internet community as very rude. If you post in ALL CAPS, 'expect' to be slammed by your peers. If you're just plain lazy, don't use any capital letters at all. Many in the Internet business type in all lowercase.

Ok, you mention you know about the bipod effect, but did you try removing it.  The Handis can be suceptible to forearm pressure or more accurately, varying forearm pressure.  First off, if it's putting them into one hole at 25, it's not the fifle thats putting them into 4-5 inches at 50.  Something changed.  The scope screwed up, the forearm pressure changed, something.

Check the scope mounts and bases, sounds loose.  Something shifted.  I had a Bushnell scope on my Win 94 Trapper 44 mag and it was shooting clover leafs at 50yds.  next trip out was 4" groups at 50yds??????

Broken crosshair that I couldn't figure out till last night when I took the scope apart.

Trigger consistance on the handi's is another issue.  Make sure you are pulling completely to the stop, because the transfer bar can make for incosnsistant primer strikes.

Finally, DO try other ammo.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Is this a new handi.
If so CLEAN IT CLEAN IT CLEAN IT.
I have always been used to getting a new gun swabing the bore oiling and shooting.
These things are greasy from the factory.
I'm talking brake or electrical cleaner. Barrel and action.
Helped both my handis a lot.
