need help/ info Mauser stock
« on: February 20, 2007, 06:45:47 AM »
I am looking for a very lightweight stock for a mauser 96 chambered in 6.5x55 If the stock is not short I will need to trim it for my wife. I have been looking at synthetics but don't know if you can cut them down.

Thanks

Depends on the stock.  The solid composites like the Bell & Carlson Carbelite can be cut to just about any length, while stocks like McMillan and others can be ordered with a specific length.  In cheaper stocks, I know that Ram-Line stocks can be shortened up to 2".  Not sure about the other brands.  Your best bet may be to get a cheap wood stock and gradually cut it down until you find a length that she likes.  Make sure you include the recoil pad too, if you're going to use one.  Then you can custom order the right length of pull.

The synthetics can nearly all be shortened but some are a bit more interesting. Those that loose the butt pad mounting holes have to have a wood bulkhead glued in to affix the pad to. Some of the factory guns now use a dedicated butt pad. They can usually be shortened but the pad is usually lost.
