Anybody ever loaded down a 7mm mag
« on: May 03, 2003, 02:04:28 AM »
I am intrigued by what I have read about "loading down" a 7mm to 280 velocities.  It seems like a very simple thing to do . . . but how much do you actually lesson the recoil.  I do not find the recoil of my 7mm a problem, but after 25 shots or so I do start to feel it in my shoulder.  Plus when hunting deer in my area (big woods) I think it would be a good thing to shoot a slower bullet for meat damage control.  Any thoughts out there?

Longwinters:  As a matter of fact I would do that with mine I had a load of re-11 I believe about 48gr. that I was shooting 140 gr. sierra bullets with however my usual load was the 160gr. that was used for bear and elk that the rifle was purchased for. :D   JIM

I don't understand why people want to do this. It is surely not safe. If you can't handle the recoil get a small caliber. Its not worth getting hurt over or damaging the gun for. They print the loading manuals for good reasons and this is not one of them.

Sierra reloading manual shows the 7mag to be safely loaded down to 2600 fps with the 140 gr bullet and safely loaded to 2500 fps with the 160 gr bullet.  Now I am not saying that sierra know what they are talking about but they sell alot of bullets and reloading manuals to those of us that would like to use a rifle with different loads than the ones that a factory loaded. :D   JIM

This is not a matter of recoil . . . it is a matter of wasting meat from animals  shot at short distances and trying to get the widest variety of uses out of a single caliber.  But  I have just bought a Nosler reloading book and I have a Speer reloading book.  I can see from their data that with a heavier bullet it is "allowable" to reduce velocity considerably using the correct amount of a specific powder (that they have tested).  I just wondered along with this question if using a heavier bullet w/ slower velocity would lessen felt recoil since heavier bullets seem to translate into higher recoil if everything else is equal.  Sorry if my original post was misleading in my question.

7 Rem Mag Loads

I had loaded the 175 grain Sierra with 40 grains of IMR4064 to about 2100FPS it grouped about 1 1/2" and recoil was about the same as a 30-30 with a similar weight bullet. If you want to load a real nice bullet for this caliber, try a 120 ballistic tip with 66grains of 4350 at @3350FPS. Thats my pet load for this case as it was sub MOA in three different rifles.
