Shockwaves & Hornady
« on: February 23, 2007, 04:48:16 AM »
HI guys,
Does anyone know if the shockwaves and hornady SST's are manufactured by the same place.  I heard they are but I was wanting to know for sure.  Thanks in advance. :)

deerman12,

Yes, they are both manufactured by Hornady. The standard 250 gr and 300 gr bullets are the same except for tip color, but the sabots are different.

Then you also have a 200 gr Shockwave that T/C wanted exclusively, and the newer bonded bullets & Super Glide Sabots.

I am not sure the exclusive opinion is correct. I believe that Hornady still has an open option to partcipate/package-manufacture.  It's my understanding Hornady remains undecided in entering the 40/50 ML bullet market.

Biff,

Did you see the word WANTED in that statement? For the last 3-1/2 years, T/C has been the only one of the two to market the 200 grainer. I don't know where you are going with this, but Hornady makes T/C's Shockwave bullets as well as their SST's.

I defined your word "wanted" as being exclusive to T/C.  While it is exclusive right now, it's not T/C's call to be exclusive. It's only due to Hornady obstaining from being in the 200 gr. blue sabot ML bullet market. Who makes the bullet has no significance here.  In my opinion, you insinuated T/C has the shelf product and no one else can market it. I don't think the door to have Hornady produce 200 gr. blue sabot SSTs is closed for good. It's just closed for now.

I do not know what you are leading to, but TC has contracted Hornady to supply them with 10mm 200 grain, .452 250, & .452 300 grain bullets named Shockwaves.  Hornady makes them proprietary to TC by changing the color of the tip.  Hornady does make make a 10mm 200 grain XTP, TC contracted to Hornady for the XTP's with a Polymere tip and again proprietary to TC.

Hornady has a contract with MMP to supply them sabots for their SST's (HPH-12's)

TC has a contract with MMP to supply them with sabots (HPH-24's and HPH 40/50) sabots.  TC has also contracted MMP to build the special EZ load yellow sabot which are also propietary to TC.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Hornady decided on the exclusive rights option -- not T/C.  The exclusive rights was offered by Hornady - before it was wanted by T/C. The plastic sabot discusiion is irrelevant. All sabot orders follow the bullet trail - they do not lead.  Every ML bullet manufacturer usually deals with a single plastic sabot manufacturer - so all are exclusive in that regard.

Goodnight to this topic.

Does  it really matter who makes the darn things? As long as they are shooting well in your rifle and do a good job at putting game down, thats what matters.

So far i only shot the hornady sabots with the sst sabot and they shot great. First one loaded a little tight but after the first, it was all easy from there.

Welll!  again I think you are wrong... Manufactures do not deal solely with one sabot maker.... it is a busines world they deal with the company that will supply what they want at the best price.  Nosler changes between MMP and Harvester all the time, depending on who gives them the best price...  MMP has not always had the TC contract either - they use to be almost all Harvester because Harvester made the thinner sabots that worked in TC barrels

If your statement were true MMP would have it made they would never have to be competitive again just get a contract and sit on it...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....
