Topper w/clip on forend
« on: February 22, 2007, 03:15:17 PM »
Does anyone have a picture of an old topper with the clip on style forend.  My father has a barrel he believes is one of these, but has no way of taking pictures.  It does not say topper on it anywhere, but he swears that is what it is.  It only says 410 full choke.  All he has is the barrel.  Any help appreciated.

 Something akin to this model?

...there are many kinds of wounded, and only one kind of dead. Do it the Handi way, one shot, one kill.

Sluggo

Thanks for the help.  That does look about right.  What I really need is a picture of the "lug or pin" that the forend snaps on to.

Thanks

This is a schematic of the above Topper, hope it helps. Scanning was a pain because it's still in a book. I can e-mail if the quailty isn't good enough.

thanks, that is exactly what i need.  according to him, that is what he has.  At least the pin looks correct.  Can you tell me what age range this is?  Also, will this fit current guns?

thanks

.....the Topper above is a model 158. If yours has the the top snap lever like the one on the pistol picture, it's 1958 or earlier. After 58, push down lever like all the present day H&R's. The only difference I can see between current and older Toppers is the switch to the single lug & screw for the forearm. Heck, it might even be better, the barrels were machined from 4150 alloy, same as the military M-14's they used to produce. I'm not positive, ask Quick or someone more knowledeable, but if yours is a push button, barrel should be able to fit up to an SB1?

It may or may not fit a current SB1 frame, I have a 1972 M158 Topper .30-30, it won't come close to fitting any modern frame, the underlug is about .100" too long, but others have old barrels that fit fine, so it's just a matter of trying the barrel to see.

Sluggo and TIm

Thanks for your help.  I will just have to get it from him next time I see him and try to fit it.  Who knows, maybe he has something I can use!

My old 12 ga H&R slug gun has a single snap on lug for the for arm.
Really a rush, as the recoil would actually lift the barrel off the forearm.

Temp solved by raping a part of a cardboard match box cover over the lug, then spaping on the forearm, to tighten it up.
If all else fails, I can always shoot supper.

My old, old H&R 12ga has the snap on forend, when I was a kid, I was shooting ducks with it and had the forend come off in my hand, that's a surprise, let me tell ya!! :o It only does that if you shoot skyward, on a level shot, it works fine.

Yeah, I hear ya.
The first time I tried out that orginal 12 ga.

Bought that H&R 12 ga, for shotgun deer season.(1970's)
Cyl bore, peep site/front blade, (like a rifle).

So, bought some Brenneke slugs, (supposed to be the "hot set up" at the time), and out to the range we go.

Set up my target @15yds just to see how it shot. Loaded it up, aimed and pulled the trigger.

It kicked up, pulled the forearm off the barrel, my thumb was sticking out, caught my nail on my eyebrow, cut it open.
From the recoil, didn't realize I had pushed the break button after the shot, so with the forearm in my left hand, when the gun came down,(no forearm) the barrel fell off at my feet.

It was laying on the ground, smoke coming out both ends.
Forearm in my left hand, stock and action in my right, blood running down my eyes.
I thought it had blown up!
After I gathered what was left of my self, checked the target and found that I had drilled 10x.

Figured that I could kill a deer with it and put it away.

Only gun I own the makes it a toss-up, who gets up first, you, or what you shot at!
P.S. Not your "stop sign gun")

P.S.S. Just picked up a 10 ga. "Long Tom", from a friend, haven't had a chance to shoot it yet like to see what thats like.

P.S.S.S Seems I have become the "old single shot guy", lately, everybody seems to call me first when they want to get rid of one.
You guys have that problem?
If all else fails, I can always shoot supper.
