What motor oil do you run in your ATC or ATV?
« on: March 07, 2007, 05:29:33 PM »
I have a Honda 125 cc ATC (3 wheeler) that is my deer dragger. It fits in the back of my pick-up with cap on and it rides up to northern Minnesota every year with me. It has started in -9 degree weather. I use 5w30 Trop Artic synthetic blend and also have used Mobil 1 synthetic until I found out Mobil 1 is not a true synthetic anymore    www.bobistheoilguy.com

Anyway I now use 5w30 year round in it but don't use it often in the summer. What are you fellas using?

The oil thing is very taboo.  Everyone has there own preferences.  Many people say to stay away from regular motor oil as they tend to cause the wet clutch in some bikes to burn up.  Funny thing is that I have never seen one. The oil police always seem to spout there warnings but offer no evidence of their claims.   Many people use car oil. I personally use Valvoline atv oil. Is it any different than the stuff you are using?  I doubt it..It just makes me feel better.... It's not so bad on price and I can find it without driving to the dealer.  Its about $4.00 a quart and I only need three.  I had an old 110 atc that used reg quaker state for years without a hiccup.  I think oil is oil and what matters is that you change it every now and then.  I only change mine once a year. I don't put that many miles on mine.

I use 15w40 Shell Rotella in mine, the same as my tractors and equipment.    If i ran it in a lot of below zero weather, i'd switch to 10w30....

I have seen a motorcycle clutch start slipping when a guy started useing slipery car oil in it, but they are very hi-powered compared to an ATV...

I use the manufacturer's oil.  It's about 4.25 a quart and my machine uses 2 plus a little.  As mentioned before, the key is keeping the oil clean.

Oil filters won't filter the acids and other harmfull chemicals out of the oil, but changeing it will get rid of them...
