Rechamber for .41 ?
« on: March 06, 2007, 04:43:54 AM »
Any of you ever seen or done a .41. I do not know much about ballistics or rechambering but for some reason this .41 intriges me and since I have been shooting my .357 mag revolver and now getting a .357 barrel from NEF I have started to think about the .41 again . When I had the 44 it was just to much bang for me but it is now aparent that the 41 ain't going nowhere and should be here for quite a while . What are the pro's and con's of this thinking? What cal bbl would you use for rechamber ? thanks Kurt

Yes it is do-able in a handi with an avg max pressure of 36000 but no handi barrel could be just re-chambered , you would have to have it re-bored and re-chambered both , the cost of this would run from $450 to $600 depending who does the work .

This would also be a way to avoid the over bore problems that the 44 mag has , yet still have one in a pistol round .

Stimpy's $450-$600 cost includes the cost of the rifle, btw. A rebore and rechamber will cost from $200 and up, most likely closer to $300+ with the ejector/extractor work.

While we are ‘what ifing’ how about having a barrel re-bored and re-chambered for a .44 mag with the correct dimensions and twist???  What barrel would you start with?

Ya Tims right on prices , the ones that i quoted were from my 32 H&R job , had to buy the sportster and then send in for a 22 mag bull barrel on top of the cost of the barrel work .

Wayne is charging me around $100 to do a re-chamber and mod the ejector for my 218 Bee barrel , as far as the 44 mag , i would think any STANDARD H&R barrel would work as long as it had a bore less than 44 cal and enough metal to work with .

I don't remember the barrel spec. off the top of my head .  ???

I think a .223 bull barrel would make a fine donor barrel for the .44mag conversion, a standard barrel may not have enough barrel left at the muzzle.

What are the muzzle specs for a standard barrel , do you know off the top of your head ? what i was thinking is the bull may be added weight that is not needed  if a normal barrel would work .

I guess that the bull could be turned down some also to reduce some weight too .

I was comparing what would work and wouldn't by the diameter of the my 22" .45-70 barrels which are .793" and .799", the same diameter as most .223 bull barrels. Another one that may work that's a little smaller at the muzzle, is the .357Mag, mine is .763" at the muzzle, but I would think most would consider it a waste of a .357 barrel as a donor when .223s are plentiful. ;D

Of course, if you shortened a regular contour donor barrel to 16"-18"maybe even 20", there would be plenty of barrel for the .44. Regular contour barrels can measure any where from .625" to .700" from everyone's input and measuring mine.

Dang it I just sold my 223 bull barrel.  Sounds like a project I might be interested in when I save up enough money.  After getting a new 1994 in .44mag and a Stevens in .223 it might be a while but verrrry interesting!  Hay, how about just having the whole thing set up for .445SM??? :o

A .41 Mag barrel for a Handi would be great to go with my .41 Mag revolver.
If I could get a .44 Mag barrel for a Handi that was not overbored I would buy one in a heartbeat. I understand there may be some movement in that direction, I have read here that a couple of new .44 Hnadi barrels  may have come with .432 bores or even less, the owners reportedly found this out when they slugged the barrels....<><.... :)

Yes I am happy I have my .41. It is sort of a one of a kind, a 3" barrel, round butt S&W with fixed "battle sights". The action has been gone over by the S&W custom shop and it functions and fires sweeeeeet. It is very accurate and although a bit heavy not to bad to carry in the right holster. I on occasion have used it carried on my hip when way up in the North Maine woods by and on the Canadien border spring flyfishing for trout. I know they will never bother me but when you are many miles away from the nearest paved road and there are bear tracks, even if they are black bear tracks, on the sandy spits of land in the streams it's comforting to have something with you. Ever been miles away from anyone else in the woods, it's all quiet except for the sound of the rushing spring water in the stream and all of a sudden the hair on the back of your neck starts to stand up and you just know someone, or something is watching you? It's an eeiry feeling and it's nice to have that weight on your hip then, but you still keep looking behind you all the way back to the truck, especially when pushing through the brush so thick around the stream that you cannot see 3 feet in any direction. The walk back seems more like 10 miles than than just a 1/2 mile or so....<><.... :o

How about considering the 357/44 Bain&Davis cartridge? It will push a 158 grain hp at 2100 fps in a 10 inch contender barrel.

I'm wanting to go with the revolver as I already have to many single shot pistols in my encore. Although I have been thinking about a contender in 17MII. Kurt
