« on: February 25, 2007, 06:48:19 PM »
Hi there. Are there anybody who has tried this? Do the Handies come in 35 Rem? I thougt this must be a good combinations for a woods rifle.

No 35 Remington or 358 Winchester has been factory offered, but I do have a .357Mag that's I had rechambered to 35 Remington and MSP is having one done now too.

I would like this cartridge to be offered as well (the .358W).

I have an HB in .308W and have considered (the thought) of having it rebored to .358.  Methinks it'd make a VERY EFFECTIVE whitetail shooter from a tree stand (combined with the short length of the rifle), with little tissue loss.

Why not just buy a 308 and have the barrel re-bored to 358?  You could get just the twist and type rifling you desire that way.

Is reboring something you would consider? I dont think there are many gunsmiths that would do this kind of work her in Norway. I was thinking; what is the twist in the 357 barrel from NEF. Would this be possible to convert to a 358 Win? It is not legal to shoot anyting bigger than a roe deer with the 35 Rem :-\

The .357 Mag barrel has a twist rate of 1:18¾", will shoot cast bullets to 250gr just fine, and I'm pretty sure it would do well with 250gr round nose jacketed bullets too, but not spitzers. Twist rates for all H&R rifles can be found in the FAQs and Help sticky, along with lots more good stuff! ;)

I didn't realize you were in Norway.  Reboring a 308 barrel is not a difficult job for a qualified smith, but I have no idea of what it might cost there.  It's usually a couple hundred dollars here.

$250-300 is a closer estimate for reboring, that's what Wayne York charges for his 6 groove cut rifling.
