Hunting Jacks On The Run

What is/or would be your favorite gun & caliber for 'jumping jacks' (jacks on the move)?

My favorite is a 12 ga. Shotgun, second is 17 HMR and last is a 223.

No such luck here on the fast, fun targets as we only have groundsquirrels, groundhogs, and some occasional long range crow sniping.

Those Jacks...can one still "bump" one into the 50 or 60yd dash but then they stop & pop-up to see what's happening? I would think that this would make for some great handgun shooting.

I would assume most of us would prefer a semi.---I have a couple of 22 lr semi-auto's, but hitting running jacks in the head or boiler room, would be a rarity.  With the LR shot placement would be very important. ---  I also have a M-1 .30 carbine in great condtion.  That could get a little expensive, though.  I've been debating on a semi in 22WMR as well.

Freedom arms 454 or a 45 long colt.
We have alot of jacks and there is no better handgun practice at any price. It is suprising how close a shot can be and still miss the rabbit. It seems there is a lot of air around a running rabbit.

When living in New Maxico I used a .22 pump.  60 to 120 yards, it was a blast.

Nothing will sharpen your shooting skill better than a running Jack, Use your favorite hunting Rifle for best results. Shucks we have a poster here that can do this all day long and never miss a shot, Kinda reminds me of rambo.........Joe.......

The only running rabbits I can shoot at around here are cottontails, but for the last few years, those shots are few, and far between. I used to love popping them with a 22 rifle!

If I had to choose a gun for your famous jack rabbits it'd definately be my open sighted 357 rifle.

I remember yrs. ago using a 22, that never seemed to really stop them w/o follow-ups.  I wish I hadn't sold my Camp 9, but i'm thinking my M-1 carbine or getting another small centerfire carbine.  maybe even a another 22mag.  For this type of hunting I prefer a semi, however, maybe a lever in 38 might be fast enough.

I have a Henry Lever action .22 that I usually carry while jumping jacks. It's alot of fun trying to  get them with open sights. I also carry  my Ruger Bearcat 22 pistol while antelope hunting. It's quiet and when I jump one within 50 yards it's hard on them.

I hunted jacks for years with everything from Class 3 type weapons to deer rifles.  I remain convinced, that in tall sage/close cover a tight patterning 12 gauge auto or pump is perfect. If distance is involved, a nice .223 auto with an aimpoint type optic or low/variable scope on it.  I won't print the stories of my now deceased buddy who ran around in bib overalls, pop bottle glasses, and a 180 series Mini 14 with open sights and how far away he used to kill running jacks....consistently....    .22 lr just don't get it done with fairness to the animal when they are running, this coming from a guy that killed a hundred a day with a .22 in my younger years, and most required running down for a coup de grace (sp).

Just my .02 cents.   Wish they would come back some day.

"fairness to the animal"?LOL Whats fair about using a 4x4 vehicle to chase them down,blind them with a spotlight and shoot them with a semiauto rifle?Fair has nothing to do with hunting and these rabbits are varmits,least of all worrying about being undergunned with a 22lr.

I'll second that.  I think it takes at least a 22 mag. to tag the jacks if they're more than about 50 yards out.

I won't critisize any one for their methods, as far is it is legal, however, as a sportsman I respect all game animals and varmints.  I believe as a responsible hunter, that all quarry should be dispatched quickly and effectively.  That's why I've ruled out the 22lr.

I have honestly killed hundreds of jacks and MANY of them with a single 22 lr shot,100 yd and under a single shot placed in the vitals is a quik killing shot.Maybe your jacks are touger than the ones i shoot?

Nonya - The ones on the run weren't hit in the vitals.  Sometimes I hit them slightly behind that.  I just wanted some other choices, of how I might stop them with a misplaced shot.  Semi's are fun because you can take that 2nd & 3rd shot.  As it stands now, I may just use my 30 Carbine.  Thanks!

Nonya, I think everyone pretty much responded for me.  I like shooting jack rabbits, I don't "hate" them.  "Fairness to the animal", yes you are right its a jackrabbit, anything goes pretty much, but I would prefer to obliterate them with a .223 on the run or shoot them in the head like you say......then they are DEAD.  I don't want any of them laying there suffering. I think we're on the same page.  :)
