Joe,
I have never shot a moose or an elk.
The one moose I did see shot was with 165 grain Sierra Gameking out of a .300 Savage Model 760.
Good sized moose shot through the lungs. The moose turned and faced the other way and was shot again through the lungs.
The third shot hit it in the neck just as it was falling.
Range was @70 yards.
The ballistic coefficient of a Sierra 165 Gameking in .308 is .248
The ballistic coefficient of a Sierra 175 Pro-Hunter in .323 is .240
Should we expect, at similar velocities, that the .323 175 grain bullet would work similarly to the .308 165 grain bullet?
One is a BT and the other is a FB, BTW.
Should I ever get a NE moose tag, I would probably use the 270W with a 150, or the 30-06 with 180s, or one of the 8x57s with a 175. I'd probably load any one of them for @ 2500 to 2700 FPS at the muzzle. I bet the moose would give up as quickly for one as the other.
One of the aides where I work shot her NH cow with a Mini-30 at 60 yards.
