Neck Tension
« on: May 17, 2003, 07:22:18 PM »
Several of my contender barrels have a very long throat , I like to try to get the bullets close to the lands for best accuracy . The question is, is  there a general theory on how deep into the neck of the case a bullet needs to be to have consitant neck tension from round to round ??
I found it intersting to find that my 1 encore has a very short throat .

you know, my 6tcu factory super 14 barrel has a long throat. it worried me before i started loading for it. i couldn't  reach the lands at all with most bullets.  I AIN'T WORRIED NOW!  the dang thing shoots as good as any i ever shot. i love it. heck with reaching the lands. if you can fine ,if you can't fine. i've been told you want close to a full caliber bullet depth into the case. i followed that advise when loading the 6tcu. if you shoot 6mm, you want APPROXIMATELY(doesn't have to be exact) .243" of bullet into the case neck. :D

I have always thought that for best accuracy you did not want the bullet in the case further than the bottom of the case neck , Then case neck length on the TCU case is .265 , There are several cartidges that if you were to load the bullet into the case at least as deep as the bullet diameter you would have the bullet in the case deeper than the spec in the manual and create excess pressure. I have tried it with bullets in the case as little as .100 and have still had good accuracy , I dont know that I would leave it at .100 on a round that I was going hunting with .

I have quite a few guns that shoot best when the bullet is not very close to the rifling.  I have seen it enough that I do not subscribe to that standard theory anymore.  Experiment, you might be surprised.
