Best barrel break-in
« on: February 24, 2007, 01:12:28 PM »
What's the best way to break-in my new Stainless Encore Pro-Hunter rifle barrel?

All I've done so far is just run a brass brush through it 15-20 times.

It hasn't been fired yet!

Thanks!

I would just shoot it, but others will suggest doing much more.

I clean mine a lot for the first hundred shots or so.  I generally clean the barrel, take one shot, clean the barrel take five shots clean, then shoot ten, clean etc.  An old friend and guide told me to do this, and I always have.

The way I've done it is to use 20 rounds to break in the barrel. For the first 10 shots, after each shot, clean the bore thoroughly with a good copper solvent. For the next ten rounds, clean after every two shots. As you progress, you should notice the bore giving you less resistance as you clean. Supposedly, this will iron out the tool marks and pores in the barrel steel, which would otherwise foul with copper. I know some guys will also do a couple of patches with Flitz at some point during this.
My feeling this is not too difficult to do, and can be completed in about an hour or so at the range, so why not?

I am with Bullseye on this, just shoot it.  The whole break in thing is over blown.

Thanks for the replies!

What I had originally thought was "if it looks fouled, clean it, otherwise shoot"!

I think I'll drag the bore snake down through the bore after a few shots!

I know that sometimes each has their own method and none of these would hurt anything.

Thanks again;
