Mitchell Mauser's Model 48
« on: March 16, 2007, 03:29:21 PM »
Anyone looking for one of those accidents of history. Mitchell Mauser's Model 48. I ordered and received mine a few days ago. The price was higher than advertised. Crest was ground off. No model number on gun. Pristine bore was heavily frosted. So was I. Its a shame cause it was in excellent condition otherwise. When I called they did say send it back for a replacement or refund after I had to pay return shipping to get what they should have sent me in the first place. After all it was guaranteed. Would I purchase another gun from them? Not in this lifetime. P.S. Hope I posted this in the right area. I'm new at this.

I dont trust them .  When they first started to sell the Yugos they made it sound like it was a German.

I bought one of the yugos and it was mint.  I agree that most (all) of the outfits that deal in milsup tend to overhype their stuff.

I agree with you beemanbeme, I thought mine was mint until I was shooting 12inch groups at 50 yards. After shooting 2 1/2 inch groups with my Enfiled 308. I realize I'm comparing apples to oranges.          But once I took a flashlight and looked down the barrel from the bore end I could see the grit. I don't think anyone would call that a pristine bore, Like it was advertised.
I only brought this up cause I wanted others to know what a great deal and gaurantee I got.

RGN:  I don't think those particular Mitchell's Mausers are accidents of anything.  The Yogo plant (Preduze 44) that made those M48 Mausers mae a ton of them for bunches of different countries.  One lot they made, which was never delivered, or paid for as I understand, were ordered without the crest and were destined for Egypt (so I understand).  That's not to say that's where that grit in the barrel came from, but those Mausers of theirs have about zero collector value from a historical perspective.

I was just hoping they came through as nicely as they look in the advertisements, 'cause there ain't nothin' wrong with a brand spankin' new 8mm Mauser at the prices first offered.  JMHO.  Mikey.

"grit in the barrel" ??  Guys, aren't we cleaning these rifles before we shoot 'em?  Mine had enough cosmoline in and on it to grease an elephant.   ;)
FWIW, I didn't buy mine for any historical reasons; I just thought they looked kewl. And bases on shooting mine, I went out and bought a Remington Classic in 8mm.

Sorry you went with Mitchell. I bought three 48 Yugos at gun show last year. All new unfired, with bayonet, cartrideg pouch, cleaning kit, sling  and oil bottle. They were $149 each and shot as well as any Mauser.

Another vote for the gun show, there are many different milsurp dealers who have piles (pretty much literally) of guns around.  It's good being able to pick yours out of the so many not so good  others out there. Even if you do end up spending $20 more.  See, money can buy happiness.  ;D
