another handi reloading question
« on: March 01, 2007, 04:27:45 PM »
ok i got the perfect powder measure with my lee kit, and it will not throw a consistent charge to save its life.  so what are you guys using for powder measures?  i would like to be able to reload everything from 204 to 500 sw without having different measures like some do (one for pistol, one for rifle)  what are you guys using and do you like it.  thanks a lot

I use the RCBS Uni-flo that came with with my Rockchucker press kit. It works very good with "ball type" powders but not with extruded. I now use all ball powders for all my reloading, except for some H4831SC that I use for my buddies 7mmSTW and then I use the trickler and pan. After that powder is gone we are going to WC872 and then with that powder being ball type it will work with two throws of the Uni-flo as the case takes near 90 grains with that powder.

I was always told the Lee perfect worked well with extruded but not "ball type"

I started out using the same measure.  I dont think it was designed to throw perfect, accurate measures. It's purpose was to get you close and then you finish the load with a trickler and pan on your balance scale. it is time comsuming but you get near perfect charges that way on every reload.

Started out with a Redding balance and trickler. I now have a Lyman electronic dispenser. Dial up the charge and press the button.

I've got the Lee Perfect Measure too and it will not throw the same charge twice with extruded or ball powder. It will get close which is all it was intended to do. I've got an old set of Lee dippers I use to get close then trickle charge the rest in which works as fast for me by the time I fool around getting that powder measure set. The automatic type Quick posted is the way to go but then you have to decide if it's worth it to spend the money on that are just buy another Handi rifle!

I gave up on my  "perfect powder measure " after i found out the hard way that I had to check every case to be sure the powder hadn't bridged up and had actually dumped into the case. Now I just use the dipper and trickler and weigh each load individualy. It takes time but I'm not in a hurry anyway and my loads are as consistant as is humanly possible.

Josh

How long have you been using it , took about 4 pounds of powder before mine would throw a good charge and you need to keep the hopper atleast 3/4 ways full to keep the down pressure on it .

I will get a bridge once in awile as with all powder dispencers but for the most part it is with in .1 grains throw to throw .

My results are about like Stimpy's, extremely consistant.  One thing that helped me with consistancy and bridging was that I will tap the side of my  measure four times with my finger both while filling and empting into the case.  Tapping the side the same each time when filling will consistantly get the same settling and tapping when empting will make sure it all comes out into the case.  That's what works for me.
Thanks,
Trapper Jack

well i ran a pound of powder through it like the manual says.  this was supposed to get rid of any static that would throw it off.  will run three more through it and see if that makes a difference.  thanks stimpy.

Try working the handle the same everytime you throw a charge too Josh ... this helped me get much more accurate charges.

I have one RCBS Chargemaster I love. For my progressive, I use RCBS Uniflows with the micrometer adjustment and powder baffles. On the Uniflows if I am using the handle, I bang it twice on the down stroke and twice on the upstroke. This procedute along with the baffles give me consistent weights.
