.460 Rowland

I have been thinking about getting a 1911 and putting a .460 Rowland in it for hunting for a while now, but I was wondering if anyone had any information on this caliber? Things like effective range and types of game that it would be suited for. Also I know that certain types of 1911's cannot use the .460 conversion because of the higher pressures. What makers would be okay to use?

I'm looking into the same project myself.  This link to Clark Custom Guns has some good information.  Brownell's also carries their conversion kits.

there is a part II and load data. If you do a search, John Taffin did a write up too, and he has some heavy cast bullet loads that I tried but chronoed yet. I got some 300 grain jacketed bullets that I've been wanting to try but still too cold. They were supposed to be for my 45 ACP, but figured the 460 Rowland would would give me more velocity. Got a conversion I bought from a friend, and it works great in my old Norinco. Comp works great too! Tossed between a lighter bullet or heavier, but when my buddy still had the conversion, we chronoed a 230 XTP load at 1400+fps! It was moving! The guy who came up with the cartridge also had a little about how he came up with the cartridge, but I have to go find out where it is. I played with the 45 Super many years ago, when only brass available was cut down 308 brass and inside neck reamed, and Ace Hindeman was alive. I think this Rowland conversion is a better setup.

Thank you for your help both of you! I enjoyed your links and I can't wait to get started on this project. Too bad it will have to wait a while since I am out right now. So do you think that it would work with a Rock Island?

I would call Clark Custom's and ask them.  They'll be able to tell you for sure, but don't be surprised if they say it might require "minor" fitting.
