Deshka River Reattack

Went out yesterday on the Deshka River again.  Dad still didn't manage to land a King Salmon  :cry: but had a few on the line.  I'll bet we lost 4 fish to every one we landed.  I'm taking dad and my brother-in-law on a halibut trip Monday out of Whittier -- pray dad finally gets his Alaska fish :wink: .  Then it's off to Valdez next week to fish for Pink Salmon with a friend down there.

My brother-in-law with his first King Salmon.  What a show off.  Dad and I got him started shooting and fishing.  Next year we hope to get him out hunting.  I figure it's all payback for those times my little sister (his wife) was a pest while we were growing up.

Nice fish!

If the whether forecast holds, you should have a great trip out of Whittier.  I venture to say he'll enjoy it even if he doesn't get fish, but I hope he hooks up with a barndoor.  Just remind him that with circle hooks, you don't set the hook!  Trying to set a circle hook will just wear him out pulling up a 1-2# sinker from 100+ feet of water to re-bait the hook, been there, done that, slow learner I are.  Maybe you guys will get into some rockfish too.

Paul is right about circle hooks - good advice.  When I first saw them I refuesed to believe they work but they work VERY well.  Good luck.

Sounds like a great time Matt.  Looking forward to have you and the family over next week.  The weather is beautiful over here. Flat waters and light winds.  Were going for the big one.  Picked up another rod the other day at a garage sale.  Penn rod with a 4/0 Senator for $20 bucks!  Were all equiped and ready to go here.  

Tell your dad, some sort of pink fly will probably work if he wants to fly fish for pinks.  Been getting some really big ones.  The harbor is bussing with fishing boats.  Best year ever so far over here.
