Helping out the deer
« on: February 16, 2007, 02:24:29 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I just took a waist-deep 1/4 mile walk with my wife today checking on our cabin. I used to feed until it became illeagel and  the threat of CWD came to the forefront. I have planted plots, but they are gone. I have cut trees for the buds. I saw maybe two tracks today. I know that the deer probably moved off to the limited ag lands surrounding us. My question is "what more can I do?"  We have over 4 feet of snow. I read somehwere that deer, well-fed, can survivive 65 days wirhout eating.  They had a good mast crop, plus my small plots. Is ther anything else you guys are doing to enhance the carrying cappacity?

K.K.  In order to increase the carrying capacity of a parcel of land requires more than just planting food plots.  Don't get me wrong they (food plots) DO help, but are not the complete answer.  Start by asking yourself "What do deer require in order to thrive"?  They require Food, Water, Habitat, and Cover.  By providing all of these items, you will not only provide the necessary nutrition, but also provide a water source that will enhance your food plots.  Additionaly, cover will provide the deer a means for escape and hiding.  Habitat provides the additional nutritional needs of the deer.  Put them all together on your property and not only will you grow bigger deer, you will have those bigger (healthier) deer on YOUR property, not someone elses.  Best Wishes, Joe

K.K.:  it is illegal to feed the whitetail, regretably.  new york politicians don't want the whitetail fed because it increases their chances of survivability which increases whitetail/human interaction, usually of the vehiclular/whitetail sort and that causes accidents which raises insurance costs, etc..  politicians listened to their long island and hudson valley whiners and that prompted an opening up of doe permits which has severly reduced the number of whitetail in many counties.  Now, in my neck of nys, only land owners can get doe permits.

I have found that when I feed the birds, using sunflower seed, bird seed and whole corn that I can't do anything to keep the whitetail away and they get pretty healthy eating all that bird food.  Since I am using that food to feed the birds, which is legal, there is nothing I can do about the deer and turkey eating that stuff, especially at night.

Gosh, looks like lots of critters benefit from my feeding the birds.  I have also found that if you take a bale of good hay, the mice and birds like the seeds and use the grass to improve their nests.  Funny thing, the deer also eat that stuff.

Pesky dang deer.......................... Mikey.

Thanks, Guys. I know that feeding is illegal, and I understand the reasons why. my property has lots of cover, a creek, and a nice stand of oaks, and food plots. I just feel for those poor critters after this last storm.  I would hate to lose any of my precious deer to winterkill.

KILL COYOTES!  They love to run them down in deep snow.
