Indiana proposed rule change for deer hunting

The new proposal for using a rifle with a pistol cartridge has the following wording take from in.dnr.gov
   (4) A rifle must:
  (A) fire a bullet of three hundred fifty-seven thousandths of an inch (.357) diameter or larger;
  (B) have a minimum case length of one and sixteen hundredths (1.16) inches; and
  (C) have a maximum case length of one and six hundred twenty-five thousandths (1.625) inches.


With these requirements what would be a good handi to fit the bill of a medium range rifle in a handi?

The 357 Magnum, 357 Maximum, 357 Dan Wesson, 45 Colt, and 44Magnum, to name the most common. Some are not stock Handi-rifle chamberings.

I would think the .357 Maximum would be a very good round with a case length of 1.605".

500 s&w, i think that should be enough to knock down a deer. ;D  actually i am going to shoot one with it next year and see how it does.

about any of the pistol chamberings offered in a handi would work. My thought would be a 357max might be the best option since it would be cheap to reload and has good power. I was looking at the 500 but even reloading it gets pricey very quick from what I have heard. Anyone have any real world data as far as shots at different distances on deer or a range I could expect to be reasonable over what a shotgun can do?

Met a retired gentleman from Indiana Saturday at the rifle range in Fort Worth. He had his 45/70 BC barrel on a standard stocked SB2 frame out fine tuning the scope and excited that he'd get to use it for deer instead of a shotgun this year if this passes. However, with the maximum case length of 1.625 inches the 45/70's not going to work. It's .48 inch to long. He's going to be real dissapointed.

Is it that crowded, or an overreaction. Can you not use a 30-06 type round anywhere in IN. at all, or is this just in the more populated counties?

I'm from indiana and yes the rules are pretty screwed up.  You can't use a nice accurate rifle in 308, but you can use a 308 or any other rifle cartirdge in an pistol of some kind and hunt with that.  It's common sense that most people shoot better with a rifle than they do with a pistol.  I think that's a no brainer, and I can't blaim people for using the rifle/pistols because it's legal.  Much of Indiana is pretty flat and I understand why they wouldn't want the high power rifles to be used for deer hunting.  However, you can use a 30-06 in Indiana for something.  The varmints in Indiana are fair game with any kind of rifle.  Again, does it make sense that a guy can pick off a ground hod with a 30-06 or larger but can't take one into a tree stand?  Indiana hunting regulations are extreamly out of date and need addressed.

I live in northern LA county.  To give you an idea, LA county is about 1/4 the size of Ohio.  Up here, in the high desert, we can hunt coyotes with anything we want for cartridge.  I can sit and call them in for my 223, but in the same area, I cannot hunt squirrels or rabbits with a 22LR.  Even the F&G people cannot figure that one out.

I also hunt deer in the same area with a 30-06, go figure???  You guys don't have a lock on dumb rules.

anyone have a handgun caliber that outshines the others in a rifle? As far as the rules go i guess you just have to play the rules of the game like with anything else. I can tell you that I often hunt on public ground and if high power rifles where a part of the opening day gun season I would not even be looking out the windows of my house with the way some people will shoot around here.

The .357s shoot very well, They are plenty good medicine for deer at moderate ranges, I perfer heavy cast bullets 180gr or so but others like hornady XTPs work very well also, Most handies will shoot the Dan Wesson .360 (DW .360) Its just a little longer .357 and lets you step up the velocity a little, No rechamber required and uses the same die set as .38/.357s. Now all that said you can rent a reamer cut your Mag chamber to a .357 Maximum which just happens to be one of mine (and I do believe alot of guys here) Favorite rounds. Pleasure to shoot and plenty of power, Mine shoots inside a inch and a quarter @ 100 with 180gr LWFN GC over 21grs of IMR 4227 @ 2000 FPS, Still allows you to shoot .38s .357MAGs .360 DWs and .357MAX.

 IMHO The .357 handies is one of the best there is. 8)


 BTW loaded down its good for small game to. :)

I have to agree with the .357 Max chambering. You can shoot everything from .38 Special mid-range wadcutters for fun and small varmints to full house .38 Special, to .360 Dan Wessons, to .357 Maximums, plenty for of power and accuracy for deer, varmints, and targets and many accurate and cheap and bullets from 100 to 200+ grains, plus some more expensive ones to choose from for any velocity you care to load to, it is your go-to caliber....<><.... :)

You might squeeze 150yds out of a 44 Mag.  I get 1800fps from the muzzle of my 16" barreled Winchester, using factory 240gr loads.

I got some pretty good reports from folks out to 150 but not beyond that.  Rainbow trajectory though.

If you reload, go for the 357 max.  I wouldn't trade mine for any other gun I have.  Easy, and fun shooting, and with the right loads, extremely accurate.  Plenty of knockdown power for deer out to 100 yards and I wouldn't hesitate on any but the biggest brutes out to 150.  Get one, you will love it.  But you better hurry, from the time frame some have been giving around here, it could be a couple of months to get the 357 mag barrel from the factory.

Hey, i'm in Indiana also and have been wondering what i'd like to get if they change the rules.  I've been leaning toward a Marlin 1894 in 44mag.  If this is good for 150 yds, i'd probably be satisfied.  I've also strongly considered the .454 in a Legacy/Ross/puma lever action.  I'm not sure how much more effective the .454 is that the 44 mag.  If someone know the rifle ballistics of the 454, please let us know.  From what i've seen, the 454 doesn't seems to throw a 260gr about 2000 fps from a carbine and the 44 mag is around 1800 or so with a slightly lighter bullet.  i've also thought about just purchasing a handi in 44 mag or keeping the rifled slug barrel.

jy brings up a good point about rifled slug guns from what I am hearing about the 357max and 44mag they seem to outshine a slug gun by far is this what everyones thoughts are about this?

actually, i think a rifled slug barrel with partition golds or core-lokt ultra's definitely have a better trajectory than a 44 mag.  i'm just not sure of the accuracy out that far since i've never shot at anything that far.  to be honest, i've been hunting with a high powered hand gun lately and will be using a .308 handgun when hunting over fields, and the rifle when in the woods.  i just think lever action guns are cool and would love to hunt with one.  44 mag would offer a good combination of cheap bullets and decent range.  you could plink with the 44 and also use 44 specials.

If you want more yards just get a Huntsman,  you are already hunting with a single shot rifle.  Then you can hunt in both seasons with the same gun.  I have shot deer at 150 yards with mine, no problem.  I'm a hoosier and I want a reason to get a new gun as much as the other guy, but to me the muzzleloader makes more sense.
