Milkman dry milk no longer made.
« on: September 17, 2008, 03:48:49 PM »
On my last trip to Anchorage, I tried to find large boxes of Milkman dry milk for use at home, as we don't get into town for months at a time.  We had found Milkman brand dry milk to be a good substitute for regular or boxed milk in remote locations.  With a milkfat content of +1%, chilled, and aerated, it is pretty good tasting.  We couldn't find it in any store and was told that it would not be carried anymore.  So, I got online and tried to find a distributor.  The distributor in California was called this morning and got a recording telling us that it was no longer being produced.  What a shame for those of us living in the bush and backpackers.  Now, our backup solution is Carnation instant, which both the wife and I dislike immensely.  Maybe if we add a can of evaporated milk to it, it might be palatable.  Anyone have any other suggestions?

Well not my childhood, but it was my children's.  This was the only viable dry milk product that was half way palatable.  It is too bad they are out of production anymore.

It was most of what we drank when I was growing up.  Until we had enough money to buy regular milk.

I was blown away when I went to college, and found that the ten gallon box of milkman was more expensive than ten gallons of milk... that is what happens when you take an alaskan and put him in the middle of arizona.

I had to ask Mama what brand it was that she got last time , Mountain Maid , I like it much better than the Carnation stuff , it even tastes like milk .  ;D  Not white water .

She picked up 10 bags of it last time she went shopping , it mostly gets used for cooking but will get drank when we don't feel like running to the store .

You might try Nido brand. Comes in high-fat versions and tastes very good. However it won't keep forever after opening, so you might want to get the 1quart cans. It is a powder, but it does have a lot of milk fat in it.

Here in Oregon I can only get it at Mexican food stores - not sure why.

Hey thanks for this post and the leads on alternatives.  We were dumbfounded to learn no more Milkman. It was a standby for me growing up in Anchorage. And more so living in the bush and smaller towns since 1977.  We have been looking for alternatives. My wife has learned about a whey product that she says is pretty good but we haven't gotten any yet. She used it at a church camp on Lake Clark. I picked up some Flavorite Powdered that will work fine for cooking but I agree with others that the Carnation and similar just aren't as good as Milkman for drinking or on your cereal.

Last year I think I heard a rumor that Sailor Boy pilot bread might not be made much longer. There was a bit of a panic and I think a newspaper article tracked down the maker who reassured us the rumor was false.  I would hate to lose that bush staple.

I'm going to look into those alternative brands as fresh milk is about $8 a gallon here in Dillingham.

Myenberg Powdered Goat Milk.  We have trouble with cows milk around here so its either soy, rice, or goats milk.  Always keep a can or two  of Powdered Goat Milk around.  My little one has been drinking it most of his life and likes it.
